You have the standard Amp Meter Right?
Switch the wires on the back of the Amp Meter should move negative when fans come on. Disconnect battery when making the wire switch.

And THEN if it still averages more negative, you do have an inadequate charging system versus the demands you are placing on it.

This has been helpful for me as well...I was wondering why the heck my amp gauge moved to the plus side when I turned my fans on....that just didn't make sense....but then again I am not used to amp gauge....voltage gauge I understand...
Guess I have to reverse the wires...thanks blas....I assume I should be able to change the wires from behind the dash without removing the speedo?

Depends on your hand size and body contortion abilities to get into the footwell to see what you are doing under the dash with your hand. But Amp meter comes out easily with one knurled nut on back side of dash thru the front of the dash and it's easier to remove the wires because they are twice as big as the normal wire clips and should be very snug when removed and installed. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST.
Sure helpful if you guys would add your car numbers to your info displayed in the upper right corner of your posts. 4 different wiring configurations on SPF's defendant on chassis number and helps me help you with other tips and tricks.
