Brake fluid flush

For those that have done this, how much fluid is needed for a complete change ?

AZ Cobra Mike 04-24-2016 02:25 PM

I used one and a half 11 oz bottles to do mine. Mine takes DOT 5 and I found the Gunk brand fluid is purple. Sucked it through the calipers till I got purple fluid. Made it so much easier.

Will usually take about two of the small bottles. So, to cover bases, if you are not switching types (DOT 3 to 5 or DOT 3 to DOT 4 synthetic) then no worries, flush until new fluid comes through. Otherwise, you will need to use de-natured alcohol to flush the old fluid, then the new fluid to flush out the alcohol. Anyway, just make sure not to mix the two types.

I'm experienced on the "how's", have done several, just a capacity query. Probably use a couple fresh cans of Super Blue I've had.

Took 15-20 oz. of Super Blue. Ke....rist, what did they do, mount the master cylinder on the frame then build the car around it? Took forever to get the pressure bleeder cap on the damn master.

I'm guessing you missed the access panel in the front drivers wheel well?

Last spring I bought a brake bleeder vacuum kit. Now changing the brake fluid in a car is a one man job that takes about 30 minutes.

I have done six cars and a F250 so far.

I buy two large cans of fluid. You will need an air compressor to use this kit.

I bought one similar to this unit

I have one and they are not bad, although mine is the original hand pump unit. I believe, however, the pressure systems that connect to the master work better in a lot of systems. I use the pressure system from Motive and it eliminates any air being left in a caliper. The rub for these cars is connecting the cap with it's hose to the master. It's a tough bend through the access panel and has to be done from the engine compartment .

I use the Motive Products bleeding system. Piece of cake once I got the right cap to fit on the reservoirs. One-man quick job!;)

You can order it off Amazon (Deutschland). Your account here, works there. Prime does not, however.

What type of fluid was SPF using in 2004? Do we really have to flush with alcohol if unsure of the fluid type previously used?

SPF has always used DOT3/4 and has never factory filled with DOT5 (silicone) fluid.

A flush is not a bad thing if the fluid is very old, it will assure that moisture is removed from the system and allow any remaining water to be absorbed and held in suspension by the new fluid. That is how brake fluid is designed to work, to keep any small amount of water in suspension until removed during fluid replacement.

How often do you guys change brake fluid?

At a minimum for DOT 3/4, every three years. Sooner if you race or your clutch feed hovers near your primaries.

JohnnyRay 04-29-2016 07:55 PM

I change brake/clutch fluid on my Astons every other year and the 550 every year (they are known to clog brake lines for some reason). Just purchased the SPF and the service records indicate that the fluids are due for replacement...

I have so many comments about this post, but going to refrain. We are talking about changing brake fluid in a Cobra, right?
