Default Muffler Alternatives

Having worked the tuning issues out with my 289 Roadster (may still need to replace current electric fuel pump with something better, waiting till warmer weather to investigate), I'm now wondering if anyone has tried an alternate muffler for their undercar exhaust, as the factory parts leave a less than desirable, raspy sound. Reminds me of the mid 2K's when everyone under 22 years old was installing 30 series Flowmasters on their late model daily drivers. Harsh, no real character if you catch my drift. Looking for more of that smooth burble/rumble, hard to describe in writing.

Bill,

These Flowmasters (don't cringe) have the same Laminar Flow as the Sidepipe mufflers they used to make. Moderate sound (50s style). 4" tall case. avail in 304 and 409 SS. THe Moderate lvl versions are, Case:18"LX5"WX4"T, (overall length 24"), 2.00-2.25-2.50 dia.+ no packing to blow out.

Come on over tomorrow and I'll let you hear it for yourself. Then you'll understand what I am talking about.

69 GT500 is now living in Texas, there is a identical color 1970 GT350 convertible in it's place.

Bill,

Contact me. My 289 exhaust is out with a manufacturer for prototyping and will have three muffler tones available and also be about 1" shallower giving more ground clearance.

Rick, I thought you used my car for the prototype measurements while it was there. Just want a nice throaty, but not obnoxious "burble". When you can, send me the details, you have my email

Thanks in advance,

Bill S.

Nice video and audio here of Spintech mufflers on a Kirkham 289: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoWTU90anG4

Spintech makes low profile mufflers as thin as 2 1/4".

I watched a video on one of the Facebook groups for ERA owners recently... A guy named Rick Mignone had a nice Slabside with a good rumble. He's here in MA. I will ask if I can track him down!

Thanks for posting the link, pretty close to what I'm looking for. Difficult to really get the sound right on the under car exhausts.

There's only one replacement muffler for a 60s car, and here it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTZV...B44097E2AC10C5

Great meeting you and your wife yesterday, hopefully you got where I was going with the tone of the exhaust. Look forward to getting out in the countryside with you guys in the spring.

Bill,

Like Rick, I am also running the Dynomax Performance 17762 mufflers.

It's essentially the ERA under car exhaust, but it turns out before the rear tire. It's tucked up under the car and the exhaust sounds great from idle to full throttle with a nice tone.

Other setups are less restrictive and will provide more horsepower, just depends what you are looking for.

There are some photos on page 23 of my ERA FIA build thread.

ERA 2136 Build Log

Hope this helps.

Thanks, going to see what Rick has coming in first, then I'll decide what I'll be doing.

You might take a look at Spintech Cruisers. I chose them for my 5.0 powered Healey because of their low profile: https://spintechmufflers.com/7000-cr...ofile-muffler/ I like the sound and they don't drone.

Bill. those Spintechs are what I'm using on mine. Love the sound. Nice idle and a mild throaty sound when accelerating.

Passed through your neck of the woods around 7:30pm on Wednesday, should have called so I could hear them up close and in person.
