I really like the look of these cars in Roadster configuration. Will consider that strongly for my car.

Any clearance issues with undercar exaust compared to side pipes? Anybody know if the undercar system is more restrictive than the side exaust?

JBCOBRA 10-10-2006 08:24 AM

I have scuffed the bottom of the mufflers on a few compression dips at speed. They just barely touched.
As far as the rear exhaust being more restrictive........your guess is as good as mine. I do believe the sidepipes from SPF do choke down to 1.75" by the mufflers? I think the rear exhaust pipes are 2.5"?

Dirtrich 10-10-2006 07:26 PM

I have seen many threads about sidepipes being too restrictive but I'd have to say the undercar exhausts are even more restrictive, especially given the extra length.

My car (#1660) has 2.25" pipes from the headers to the tailpipe and I'm not an engineer or motorhead but that seems just too restrictive. The factory knows what kind of engines are being installed in these cars but that is what they supply.

I've never had any clearance issues but I did raise the ride height a bit for the initial NJ safety inspection and have not yet lowered it back down.

This is my answer to a restrictive exhaust: :MECOOL:

No Clearance Issues, but I am not using the standard exhaust. We installed a 2.5" system front to back, in the orginal style, but tucked it up more.

Regarding restriction. I am no expert, but my understanding is that you can get more performace (HP) out of an undercar system, than you can out of a sidepipes system - (now donning flame proof underwear) - But again, I am no expert and that's just what I have heard.

Also, having had sidepipes, and now undercar, I WAY prefer under car, for looks and comfort driving.

Hi Salty
Really Cool!

sp1410 10-11-2006 08:23 PM

David- your car's looking awesome! Stay out of our Oregon rain, or it'll rust...

saltytri 10-11-2006 08:26 PM

Not really a problem. You know what they say about us Oregonians: "We don't tan, we rust." The car has a lot of rusting to do to catch up with its owner after 31 years in this state!

JB,

The cutouts sound great and I'm very happy with them although I doubt they sound as good as a quality race muffler would. At full open they sound exactly like open headers with a hp engine as if ur at the local dragstrip... really, really awesome. Obviously it's only for show (or race) so I never run it that way for more than a minute or 2.

When they r only slightly cracked open, say 10 or 20% they sound great and I always drive this way. The idle is the best part, really makes the motor sound like a race motor with a big cam.

The downside to the cutout and mostly at around 1/2 open and at certain rpm's it can sound like an old pickup with a blown out muffler. However, I still prefer it to the stock mufflers but it is borderline too loud for the street.

It's also nice to be able to close them when I need or want to be quiet such as early mornings in the neighborhood. The Magnaflow straight-thru's are still far too quiet for my taste but a much improvement over stock and they sound really good themselves, sorta like an old time street rod with chambered exhausts.

The cutouts are fun and versatile but also more complicated and expensive. If ur not sure about them but also want better sound, I'd suggest a race muffler or a slightly baffled performance muffler, and forget flowmasters cause they're not stainless. I like these guys:
http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spin...ntechindex.asp
Their Stainless mufflers are made to order so they take a few weeks but they have a new style out not listed on the website. I think he said it has just 2 baffles so it'd be pretty loud but not excessively...I think. %/

Have fun, Rich
