I don't think it matters how tight they are, they will still rub the paint off. I remember back in the 80's when front end bras were the rage - they all rubbed the paint off at some point no matter how good the fit.
I'd like to find something that sticks on like the 3M, but is a little harder for added protection from the larger rocks and gravel.
