I’d call ARP and have your grip length and over all length, talk to them.....

Also inquire about the special washer that goes under the NAS624 bolt....it has a radius under the head of the bolt..and the washer has a radius to match the NAS bolt.......unlike normal bolts

We also found that the washers on our setup was compressing when we torqued them.....we then went to the NAS washer and that fixed our issue of bolts loosing torque....

Any of you guys use Unbrako screws for high torque bolted joints? UTS is around the 160000 to 180000psi, depending on type.

AFAIK, you used to not be able to even find their bolts in the states, but it looks like Grainger now carries some of them. I like their name though, much better than Comeaparto.

Thank You Morris,

Hopefully my bolt changing days are over I have the car apart now so will change per your suggestion.

Bruce

We use to torque our CV joint bolts before every session on the track....then once we figured out what was happening....we changed to the NAS bolts and washers and jetnuts .....then we changed them when ever we took the CV joints apart for service. You are right.....they were a pain to service ....

CompClassics 06-22-2018 09:42 AM

In the photos of the "aircraft" fasteners I had previously posted the nuts used were Jet Nuts.

Here is a great fastener reference guide from Coast Fabrication's website, scroll down to the fastener section and they give a comprehensive guide to sizing and performance characteristics of aerospace fasteners.

Patrickt it seems these guys have no appreciation of your injections of humor here. Oh well, the subject IS pretty serious. But keep trying!

They're nice, but only in certain circumstances for me.

I prefer to use ARP 12 point myself, just as compact.

CompClassics 06-22-2018 04:50 PM

It can be difficult depending on accessibility to get an Allen wrench into confined spaces but they do have a purpose.

xb-60 06-22-2018 06:09 PM

I do find it easier to access socket heads with an Allen key than with a ring spanner or an open-ender in a lot of circumstances.

Glen

I just measured and ordered bolts for the brake rotor to hub. This thread has been a big help!

Was that meant as a pun?

No. I had a more than working knowledge of fasteners but reading links posted here just added to that. I'm never going to say I've learned enough!

What are your thoughts on using modern Aerotight nuts. Original Cobras use them throughout the cars and owners tend to like it to stay that way. I can’t find much in the way of strength specs on modern Aerotights but curious what you guys think.
Larry

CompClassics 06-25-2018 01:37 PM

LMH,

I like the original Aerotights, I’m in vavor of most any all metal locking nuts over nylock type nuts, heat and oil can make nylock nuts useless.

LMH 06-25-2018 02:33 PM

Totally agree but are the current Aerotight nuts of a grade high enough to use in stress locations? Specifically, I was thinking of the brake rotor where it bolts to the spline hub.
On originals, those are Aerotights.
Larry

CompClassics 06-26-2018 01:43 AM

You would have to get performance specifications from the manufacturer to fully evaluate the capabilities of the nuts.

Morris 06-26-2018 10:39 AM

Especially when brake rotors run between 1100*degrees & 1300* degrees ......the bolts and nuts better work.....
