Alternator/Voltage regulator compatability

For you electrical wizards out there.....with a 63/64 40 amp (?)Ford alternator can I use the Lucas Voltage Regulator (OEM) Cobra silver, or black (for lack of a better description) or must I use a Ford regulator??
