How Much Is Too Much?
I am trying to decide on a HP range for my cobra build. I am very curious to know what the HP is in other cobras and how those cars hook up? The anticipated HP for my build is 430 HP. Any 1/4 mile times corresponding to your cars make (FFR, LSC, Unique....etc), HP, rear end type/ratio and tranny would be perfect.
Thanks, |
Most Cobras in Texas have 800-900 rwhp. 430 hp with a drive train loss of 15% should net you 365 rwhp and will get you into the low 11's provided you can get the power down and can drive.

Too much ain't enough. |
Buy as much as you can afford. Just my humble opinion.

When you can leave rubber from one corner to the next corner is JUST RIGHT anything more is too much:3DSMILE:

Mine is a 392 crate rated at 430 hp, which nets me 359 hp at the rear wheels. I have a 3.73 rear end, which puts me at 4000 rpm at 120 mph (see photo in my gallery) and a stock Tremec TKO. I have 335 Michelin Pilots out back and the only way first gear will hook up is to release the clutch over about a full second. Second gear gives more than a chirp, but if the tires are warmed up well, I can reduce that to just a chirp. Third gear will chirp is the tires are not hot. I thought I wanted more power, but this combo is really fun. Totally streetable, not a pain to drive, doesn't overheat (engine or cockpit) and I can still embarrass just about anything out there. I didn't think I'd like the tall rear end gear, but I really do. Gives it such quick pop redlight to redlight. Haven't had it on the track, so don't know it's manners at the limit.
Hope this helps! |

Have a good one, Dan |
Lawler,
The FE 390/408o/410o/416o/428 (noted over bores) are fine items with a selected hydraulic cam package, alum intake and carb, electronics ignition, alum flywheel, etc........... for a very stable 400-420 HP and have the manners of a an old Ford Pickup as far as durability and cranking running manners. With proper suspension and tires, 90% of the small blocks cannot touch them in the 0-100 range. grumpy |
All very good info. I appreciate it. I was just about to pull the trigger on a 351W too.
Thanks, |

You're on the right track...too much more HP will make the car a pain in the ass to drive.

I would try for something in the middle. Somewhere between Insane  and Ludicrous :3DSMILE: . My car is just a 351W with about 400hp at just under 2200 lbs, it is insane.
Run the power to weight ratio and any of these cars and they are in Supercar territory. Now I'm used to insane, I'm wishing for more  Randy |
My 427 center oiler down 400 RWHP and it was off the chart rich. I think I've fixed that so am hoping for 420+? The car is easy to drive, and almost seems mild, really not too scary, anymore. Guess I've gotten use to it.
My lonestar has the std 3.70 9" rear w/a 3550 tremec. I don't like the gear combo much. 1st and 2nd too low, 5th too high. I don't think the car will go over 125 w/ the current gears. Not that I worry about that too much. On poor street tires, no power shifts, etc I only ran a 12.7 at 114 mph. Track was sticky too, but 2.0+ 60' times. So no, I probably can't drive too well. Still have to roll through 1st and 2nd. Is it enough? Not hardly. I think it would still be controllable enough w/ 500 at the wheels. I think the TWM injection would be the ticket...... Mat |
I went from a stock stroke 351 to a 427 Windsor stroker. I can say from experience that "more is better".

Mmmm 400+ rear wheel and a 100 NOS system just for fun...

I am running a 302/370 hp., 5 spd. and a 4.11 final drive. It is extremely quick! 1st gear is practically useless. 0 - 60 time is 3.5 sec. I will be opting for a 427 SO built by Keith Craft in my new car. I will be running a CR 4 spd. toploader with a 3.54 final drive. I have the feeling I will be learning to drive all over again! LOL:LOL:

The engine size/power/drivablity question is partially a function of where you live. How much traffic, gridlock vs. open roads? All the power in the world won't do much good sitting in traffic. My car pretty much hates traffic.
Try and factor this into your selection of engines. |
greetings,
i have not purchased my engine yet, so that is why this forum is so helpful. to those of you that have "tons" of horsepower, how often to you really use it? on the track is one thing, but street cruising, is 400+ HP overkill. the reason i ask is that i'm on a budget of about 10-11k for engine and tranny. if i budget 2500 for tranny, that leaves about 7-8k for the power. also, i will have to "contract" out my engine, for i do not have the expertise to build one. any suggestions for any engine that i can get for that amount and be THRILLED with? thanks for your expertise and opinions, JOE |
