15” Tires bias ply only !!
I’m sure everybody’s thinking that the last thing that this site needs is another tire discussion . but for some reason all the discussions end in the same way billboards are illegal Avon are too expensive Everybody sick of BFG I would like to stick with one topic and end with one topic only bias ply tires 15” inch that are legal to drive on the street With tire sizes that actually work on a AC cobra

, go to coker tire for period correct bias tires. They will not have the sticky compound that avon and goodyear will have.

Goodyear, Polyglas are a DOT choice and from my experience very good on these cars....

Please excuse my confusion but there is clearly something that I am missing here. You know that Billboards are bias ply tires — right? You correctly state that Billboards will not pass inspection. This has nothing to do with their bias ply construction and everything to do with their lack of DOT certification / registration. I am struggling with why you would not consider a DOT approved radial that would easily make it through inspection. Then, after inspection, change them out for the Billboards with their period correct look to satisfy your appearance criteria? Ed |
in reference to the billboards they are definitely the best looking tire you can get but if you read the other posts because they are not DOT certified and if you have an accident supposedly there is insurance companies are not covering because of lack of DOT certification
I would just like to keep things simple a bias ply 15 inch tire with DOT certification and a tire that does not have a note stamped on the side wall for racing purposes only (Hoosier )I can always grind off the manufacturer and keep the solid black look like the original car But ..... if I don’t find a good looking bias ply tire I might end up throwing some tires on it to get the inspection and switch over to billboards after::D |
Let's state fact's here. From 63-67 Racing Cobras NEVER EVER had what people call "Goodyear Billboards" those tires came from NASCAR in the 70's period (This is a Pet Peeve of mine). That's when Goodyear/Firestone thought it would be a great way to advertise their product for free. The proper race tire for that era, is a Goodyear Sports Car Special, with a thin blue line around the outside of the tire (Also a Bias-Ply tire). I'm sure Glen (xb-60) has some photos he can share. These are facts. Plus I was around during that era and remember them well. There is a company out there that makes Repo. of these race tires, but you have to do the lettering by hand (About 4-hours per tire, the lettering is flush with the sidewall, No race tire every had "Raised White Letters", in that era). We have a 69 Trans-Am and 67 Camaro around here that are running those tires on the street. Can't remember the company's name (Damn) Cheers TommyRot.

Find a set of Tiger Paws by uniroyal. Wore out a few sets on a chevelle in the sixties. Sticky if memory serves me. They still make but a radial then switch out. Just a rant for old times !

I really Like the Goodyear polyglass tire unfortunately I cannot find it wider then the G60 and is about 2 inches skinnier then the billboards in the rear

MT sportsmen is a great looking tire . have you ever seen them mounted on a cobra they just seem like a really high tire possibly too big to squish up underneath the fenders

American Racer shows DOT tube type tires in the Cobra sizes.

The tires that CSX3040 wear's now (Latest pictures found) are Goodyear Eagle sports car tires (Bias Belted, No DOT) without the lettering painted (Blackwall). If you want to go that route, here's a good place to start, I'm sure they would be happy to sell you a set of new tires as well. Or go to a Vintage car race and find the gentlemen there that supply's the racers, but as Jim (1795) said they suck for street tires. I've run Goodyear Blue Streaks on the street years ago (But then I also drove my race car a few times on the street, being young dumb kid, I thought I was COOL ;) ) Think long & hard about these type of tires, ask someone that have had these tires on the street or better yet ride in a Cobra that have Bias-belted tires, before you pull the trigger. Im reading this post thinking that why does someone spend north, in some cases WAY north of $60k on a hobby car then complain that avon tires are too expensive? I dont get it..
I have billboard tires on my cobra, they are fine around town, but when up to speed on the freeway about 75mph they get scary... I will be buying avons soon. yes they are expensive, but I will save accordingly and not complain about it... some guys buy cheaper tires and trust them with your life? its really not worth it... but some guys will rather save a few hundred dollars I guess SMH... |

I agree in principal, but imo Mickey Thompson is a better street tire than AVONs; you can have your cake and eat it too because the MT's are roughly half the price of AVONs. |
