T/A's are like driving on hockey pucks; get the Avon's. There is no comparison.
|
Ah, remember the good old days when the original T/A's first came out? In 1975 I had a set on a Datsun 510 (with Corvair wheels and a BRE suspension) that couldn't have weighed any more than my Cobra, yet they were so soft (and sticky) that I only got 10,000 miles! They had out-of-round problems then too...
|
I had TA's on my '82 RX-7 for about an hour. Was raining the day I got em in NY. Went right back to the tire shop & got them off in one quick hurry!! I hav'nt done that much hard driving in mine yet to say how thay are on this particular vehicle, but chances are, and according to most of the owners here, they won't be very good!

Key point here is .......NOT TO DRIVE IN THE RAIN!!!
I have them and like the look, but I don't race it either! I drive on the street, have taken them in the curves and hit it hard once in awhile....and as long as you are moving....not bad, really, not bad! Now, there are definitely better tires....for sure, but the white lettering thing is hard to find, and the Billboards hunt too much on the street. So, if you are looking for a particular look, and size, we are definitely limited. By the way.....my car has 550 hp and torque. I know from a start it just spins......so moving helps.....but also, on the street, I always remember what I am running, and I guess it helps keep my foot in 'respect mode' Ok........flame on....................fred z :MECOOL: |
Although........you might try the ones I have on my Avatar.....they stick well.......just hard to turn!!!!!

I HAVE experienced TA's on dry roads as well, which I should have stated, and did not like them much. I do feel they will give different preformance characteristics on different types of vehicles though. I guess that's a big........ DUH!! |

A vette guy here, sneakin into your site to research 15" tires. Not many guys on the Vette sites are running big tires on Vettes like mine, because they have been returned to chalkmark restorations - no fun.
Interesting threads you got - lotsa TA bashing. Sorry, just had to pipe in...........Sounds more like a drag racing forum - everybody's scared of wheel spin! There are more than two throttle positions ya know:LOL::D Maybe it's just the different car thing, or just that your cars don't get driven as much: I put over 90,000 hard miles (over 7 years) on my Vette with TA's, and never had an issue with them - but then I like sliding, and going sideways - just gotta get used to the feeling and modulate power - had to buy at least one pair per year - was same all around so news went on front and fronts go to rear, etc. I would come home from work and hit the backroads near home for hours, and never found another car I couldn't stick with, or stay ahead of - including my buddy's Cobra:D:D. To me stickier tires just means you're going faster when you're playing at the limit,(which is where all the fun is) and will also be going faster when you blow it and go beyond the limit.........ie -- faster crash speeds.... Sure I weigh more than the Cobra's at 2,900lbs, but I was only running 235/60/15's. Didn't matter whether I was at 350 or 500 hp - just had to learn to adjust as my power level rose over the years . I'm sure it could be that the Cobra is just too light for the tire?? On my car they "mush" in the turns perfectly for me - that means they slip more and more as your speed increases in turns and are incredibly forgiving - never snapping (unless you get get scared and lift!) - they had a very "wide" edge to their limit. They stayed about the same until the tread was well beyond the wear indicators. Just an "outsiders" .02 Now I'm flaring the fenders and will be running 8.5's and 10's, so I'm in the same tire dilema you guys face%/ what to go with?? SOMEBODY needs to make some radials in those GY BillBoard sizes dammit!! Idrive too much for race tires!! Sorry that's as big a pic as site will let me upload.......... Eddy |
Great looking vette! I'm one of the lucky few that have 2 cobras. One has 235/60 fronts and 295/50 rears. The other has the Goodyear billboards all around. Since they both have the same size engine/transmission, I can tell you that the Goodyears stick, both at the start, as well as the corners. The BFG's are great tires too, but more for the vintage look than for tracking. I really think they work better on a heavier vehicle like yours. They BFG's are very streetable, while the Goodyear's take a little more patience on the street. For track, there are better tires than either of these.
Both of my cars are used for my pleasure only. I play with them and will never seriously race either. So, for me, just knowing that either tire will spin if I put the pedal to the metal, is good enough for me. Otherwise, I'll enjoy the cruise. Cobra tires
BFG "T/A" will get you killed dead in a Cobra.
The T/A's are not a good tire to put on a Cobra. Too hard of a tire compound. They look good but are dangerous on any car. Dwight |
I would still love to see someone come out with a nice agressive tread pattern (dunlop style), sticky, 15inch tire for our cars. There is definately a market for it. NOTHING looks as period correct as a 15 inch tire IMO!

My BFG TA were great for the first two years and five k miles...now they are hard as rocks! they look like new, anyone want to buy them:JEKYLHYDE
