Default 3rd gear noise

Just out for a Saturday drive to Cars and Coffee shifted into 3rd and got a vibration from the trans. first, second, fourth and fifth sound fine. Reverse has always been a problem shifting when hot. Car is #293 Backdraft with a T5 strongly considering replacing it with a WC-T5. prices are all over the lot including rebuilt to new. Looking for opinions and I know you guy's aren't shy.

Default move up to the 600 box

rich_acc Rich You didnot say how many miles are on this box or your driving prowless. If you are looking for the middle of the road in transmissions, goto a tko 500 or 600. They are stronger than the 5 trans and should bolt right in. I don't know what your gear ratio is but get a trans with a 2.60-2.80 first gear and a nice overdrive in the .80's. IMO a .67 needs a real strong torque motor with alot of grunt down in the 1,500 rpm range. Have to remember that the cobra is a brick going through the air. If money is not a problem and you are racing or driving hard, Super street Richmond and add a trans cooler kit to it. Not cheap but bullet proof to 700hp under consent load. Other thing is you might want to add a trans cooler to which ever trans you go with. When you have spare money, get this trans rebuilt and save it for a spare bullet when you need it. From racing I have learned to carry everything but a spare motor. Trannies, clutches, all ignition parts, center carrier for rearend of Jag unit. You can ask guys that where at the Run& gun, I fixed a few cars and help others repair theirs and keep running. Motor is the only way I go home. Next year may have a spare one of thoses too. Good luck. Go stronger and watch the gear ratios and drops. Rick L.

Rick thanks for the reply, it's an 05 build with 28K it stays on the street. Motor is a small block 351 taken out to 392 with dart block and alum heads, roller mod grind cam so it's around 430 hp. I think a HD T5 should hold it and yes there is a budget to consider. your correct the plan is to replace the box and rebuild the old one. Some of the builders want the core or not depending on who you speak to, and prices go from 1,200 to 1,700. I know the addage you get what you pay for but who to say, that is why I was asking for a reliable builder.

My Backdraft is #439. Just possible you are having same noise I experienced. Seemed like tranny, but was actually bottomed bolt on passenger side exhaust heat shield. Made a very annoying noise, but the addition of a washer was the fix.

Your 392 may have more torque than a standard T5 can accept. Besty and cheapest alternative is WC T5 with Roller Bearings instead of ball bearings.
