Oil seal
Does anyone have a part # for the toploader tail shaft oil seal ?
David Key's not answering phone, and mail box full . |
You could try giving Dan Williams a call, he knows all there is to know about top loaders. I spoke to him last summer and he was still around.

The rear seal will be different based on your output shaft(large/small). I sourced toploader parts from Dan a while ago, he was very helpful and generous with his time and advise. He has been around for a long time and appears very well versed in toploaders. I seen to remember he is more of a night owl, not sure if that is still the case? So, calling him in the late afternoon or early evening many prove more fruitful. I highly recommend him based on my experience, caveat emptor, that was about 8 years ago.

Yes, Dan is a night owl, do not call him in the morning. Also, he does like to chat, so plan on a nice long conversation. He probably has what you need in his store of parts. As I said, I spoke with him last summer. He is not young, my guess would be probably around 75-80 years old based on some of his stories, so there will come a time when he will no longer be a great resource. He is in NC, so same time zone as you.

If you bring the old seal to motion industries they could get you one.Not sure if you have one near you.

#$#@@!$%^^&^& I just spent the better part of an hour writing up what I discovered and I go to post and the$#$@#@ site says I 'm no logged in and wipes it out !
Short version: when tranny was rebuilt/moded, they failed to machine seal recess for c-6 seal! |
I concur with Haas.
Well, not after your last post? |
Another possibility is Larry with D&L Transmissions. I got all my parts for rebuilding my toploader from him along with his excellent advise.

Problem solved with new seal of same part# as the leaking one. Did not leak a drop on test drive ( with tunnel cover removed ).
However, when I was driving into garage, the engine stalled, and could not restart, starter spun, did not engage. Pulled starter, gear and flywheel teeth bad, have to pull f/w. Guess I'll be starting a new thread !! |

I'll have it apart tomorrow. I'll post my findings then.

Make sure to check crankshaft endfloat.

MOTORHEAD,
I can not say what caused your flywheel/starter gear issues. However, when I installed my starter the recommended gear tolerences were not within spec. I had the face of my starter machined to bring it within spec. The following post provides some insight, a search my provide others with more details. http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/fe-t...-troubles.html |

Starter and ring gears only meshing 50% . Worked well for 5K miles, but buggered up bad enough that they no longer engaged
