Which way do I go???

Building a 5.0/302 with Turbo and planning on about 400 HP to the rear wheels. Street and maybe mild racing.
Do I buy the TKO for $1300 plus $50 shipping (new)
or
The T-5 for $700 plus $50 shipping and use the difference for other Goodies?
I've heard the T-5 shifts smoother than the TKO?? Please Reply as Soon as Possible......Thanks, Earl

HELP???????????Somebody....Anybody.....Did everybody fly the Coop???????????????????

maxrpm 01-12-2004 11:23 AM

400rwhp? no T-5! It's 5 times more likely to break!

mrmustang 01-12-2004 11:25 AM

Earl,

For the money, I would go with the TKO, unless of course you have a "core" T5 laying around that you can send to Gordon Levy for one of his "special" rebuilds....His number is 480-446-8442, tell him I told you to call.

I can not believe out of "ALL" the readers out there I only got "2" replys to my question...................

Hal Copple 01-14-2004 05:42 AM

i have a 3550 tremec, and have beat on it with about 460 hp for over 60,000 miles, so i would suggest a tremec, but don't feel you need the extra strength of the TKO, as your tires will protect you with slip. By the way, i believe that the TKO has a stronger input shaft, but most of the internals are the same as in the 3550, such as synchro's, etc. Put the few hundred saved into a billet flywheel, perhaps. You may want to consider the 3560, i believe it has a different fifth gear, i believe something like a .80, instead of the .68 of the 3550. If you want to play with gearing and mph and stuff, why don't you run Mike Stenhouse's gearing calculator on the Second Strike website, check out:

www.secondstrike.com , then go to the gearing calculator.

We have not meant to ignore you, i guess we were all waiting for someone else to offer an opinion on what at least to me seems like a pretty easy decision.

Let us know if you want any impressions, we will try to do better.

all the best...

RACER X #99 01-14-2004 06:12 AM

Earl,
I have a Tremec 3550 behind 600 HP BUT I would never drag race with it and I never make full power shifts. I will keep open trackin with it until it breaks and then it's a Jerico.

I think DR. Hal is correct about the TKO only having a bigger input and output shaft.

Cranky:cool:

Oh Yea, A few years ago Bob Bondurant said the Tremec was the best shifting trans he has ever driven.

EarlsflyinCobra 01-14-2004 06:48 AM

Thanks Hal...I am honored that you answered and "LOVE" your stories. Keep them comin. I am a little confused on one thing though, I thought the T5 and the TKO were both Tremec's, just different models such as the 3550 and 3650. I guess I am going to have to research a little better to clear my confusion. Thanks again, Earl

Also thanks to Mrmustang and Racerx#99......

John McMahon 01-14-2004 06:56 AM

Listen to Hal!

I road race a Tremec 3550 behind a 351W. My old race moder put out 500 HP...no problems handling the torque with smooth crisp shifts.

RACER X #99 01-14-2004 07:02 AM

Earl,
Everything you want to know about Tremecs.

Cranky

trularin 01-14-2004 07:12 AM

Earl, why not go T56 and run the six speed?

Both of your 5 speed selections are currently used by several others. They can tell you all about them.

A six speed is in the same bracket, but I understand it is better on handling HP and cost a little more.

I could write a long detailed analysis of why I chose the trans I chose, but I GTG.

Good luck, I'd go with the T56.

Just my $0.02

blykins 01-14-2004 07:18 AM

Earl, I don't know if this is 100% correct or not...but it's the way I've been thinking about it. T-5's and T-45's are Borg Warner trannies...somewhat old school....but they're still making the T-5's. Tremec bought out or took over BW...and they're making their own trannies now. The 3650 is a 5-speed used in Mustangs...with an integrated bellhousing....you can't remove it. The 3550 is a regular 5-speed....and the TKO and TKO2's are improvements upon that. Like the other guys are saying, I think the TKO has a 26 spline input vs the 10 with the other trannies...and the TKO2 has a lower 5th gear ratio. It's called the Road Race TKO....I think they offer a Road Race 3550 also....not for sure about what's different though. Hope this takes a little mud out of the water.

BTW, have you ever thought about going the Toploader route?

GOCATS 01-14-2004 08:29 AM

I use a 3550 tremec in mine love it to death. I can't put 60K miles on it like Hal has:3DSMILE: . Both John Bennett and B&B recommend the tremec. Mine is a 5 speed. Mainly use the 5th gear as a "gas milage gear" on long trips. I can't imagine using a 6 speed in these cars due to a moderate top end. What is equally important is the clutches, bearing, and bellhousing. Often not given as much thought as the tranny.

EarlsflyinCobra 01-14-2004 12:50 PM

OK, I'll bite, what Clutch and Bellhousing is recommended?? I've been told unless I plan on rev'ing over 6500 to 7000 grand I don't need a shatterproof housing...Opinions???

DonC 01-14-2004 12:55 PM

Earl:
Sit in the car and look at where the clutch/flywheel is in relation to your legs and factor in the protection about 1/8" of aluminum provides. Then decide if you want a shatterproof housing.
DonC

EarlsflyinCobra 01-14-2004 01:06 PM

Yea, I thought about that and I tend to agree with you however experts say no need to worry....What, me worry?

mrmustang 01-14-2004 01:09 PM

Earl,

I've seen what happens when a clutch disk explodes....it's not a pretty sight.......If it was my money (and my life), I would get the blowproof housing..........................

Earl, you really should go with the Lakewood no matter what tranny you choose. A little fiberglass/aluminum won't stop a clutch trying to get a better view of the car...

A good 10.5" or 11" clutch/pressure plate would work fine. McLeod or Hays comes to mind as good brand names....

blubyu2 01-14-2004 02:21 PM

I would seriously question ANY expert that tells you you don't need a scatter sheild turning 8k rpms:JEKYLHYDE

Greg

EarlsflyinCobra 01-14-2004 06:13 PM

Sorry I was not clear....what I was told was if turning low RPM not a need, if turning 6G's or better then definite need. I just am not looking forward to all the "Horror Stories" I have heard about installing a Lakewood....Keep the suggestions coming, Thanks, Earl

PS. Bill any word yet on your Daytona stay??
