Shifting without the clutch

Transmission experts, any downside during casual driving to shifting under no load without using the clutch? I have done it for years on various cars and trucks and never had a problem, in fact got 100K miles on the clutch of my 94 GT Mustang. Took a friend of mine for a ride in my Cobra and he freaked out when I did this?

I have been shifting without the clutch for a many years, it started with my 440 Challenger after the clutch pedal dropped to the floor right after a hard run through the gears.....I just had to turn the car off at the stop lights and start it in first gear to take off.....once I became proficient at it I continue with my 01 GT Mustang 84K miles. It is funny the looks and comments you get from passengers when they realize your not using the clutch. Upshift and downshift..it's fun, although im sure the syncro rings don't like it

As long as you know what you are doing it will not effect the clutch. The only down side is that it can cause extra stress on the sycros, but there again if you know what you are doing and have the engine at the proper rpms then you will not do any damage. jimig@standardtransmission.com

I have done it for years as well. As long as it is done right. Matching seed with rpm everything works well.

To entertain myself during my college commute, I would see if I could make it from home to college with out the clutch. I actually did it once. I had a Chevy pickup with an extra low gear. Rolled out of my parking spot to start and put it in gear and rolled it right into a parking space.

I have noticed it doesn't work as well with a new-tight trans. I waited about 2k on my cobra tremac.
