tko-600... .082 or .064

I'd like to hear some opinions on what is a better 5th gear for my 351w. bored and stroked to 410. 475 hp475# torque. Rear end is 354. Thanks

Here's a few threads on the subject.

I've got the .082 5th in an SPF with a Roush 402SR and it's perfect for freeway cruising.

BeasleyRB 09-15-2008 02:01 PM

I have the .82 with a 3.25 posi rearend. Maybe not a racing set up but 5 real nice useable gears. 351W around 400 HP.

terry251 09-15-2008 02:20 PM

I've got the .64 in a 418 Windsor, 3.73 gears. It is way too tall for my driving. On the highway at 80 mph, the engine is still in preignition (detonation) range if I need to accelerate with any enthusiasm.

thanks

Lookas as though 082 is the way to go.. Thanks

392cobra 09-15-2008 05:00 PM

I have a T-56 behind a 418.It has a .82 5th gear and a .64 6th.

6th is not used all that often,it is a highway economy gear at about 80 mph and up.Which is nice.

If I had to chose which of the two I had to give up,it would be the .64.

jdean 09-15-2008 05:08 PM

Hey Fred....what gears do you have in the rear?

392cobra 09-15-2008 05:13 PM

John,how's the ole head.
Hope back to "normal".:)

I have a 9" Ford with 3.70 gears with 315/35-17 tires.

diegokid 09-15-2008 05:45 PM

.82

I just started working the bugs out of a FE with the .82 and a 3.42 rear and love it.

Excaliber 09-15-2008 05:47 PM

It's a no brainer, .82 everytime!

Hey Kid,

I am having my SPF built now, 3.46 Dana rear, I am using the Avon 295/50/15 rears (26.7" diameter).

Isn't 26-2800 rpms a lot to cruise at? (70 mph)

Thanks for posting, would like to get your opinion since you have the same setup I am getting.

.82 and 3.27 rear end. PERFECT!!!

patrickt 09-15-2008 06:53 PM

3.54 rear, .64 trans, and an FE that is comfortable at 2000 RPM. Doing 68MPH at 2000 RPM lets me chat with my passenger as the wind noise is actually louder than the pipes. BUT, if your engine is snotty below 2300 or so, don't think about the .64 -- I love mine though.:)

I would suggest you go with the .82 OD. I have a 3.42 rear, a TKO-600 with the .82 OD, and an 511" FE and am very happy with this combination.

Stentor, thanks for posting.

What rpms are you running at 70 mph cruise, and does it feel like too much?

Thanks!

Rather than opinions, why not let the use determine which way you go? Do you do more highway/freeway driving over long distances where the higher ration would serve better? Do you do mostly around town driving where the lower ratio would serve better? They both work well. I have a 428FE with a 3.56 rear end and a TKO with the .64 to serve on road trips out of the heat of the valley. I love it. If I keep the speedo between 65 and 70, I can get 15.5MPG. That's pretty impressive for a car that gets 10 MPG around town.

ERA713 09-15-2008 11:13 PM

I started with the 0.64 and the 3.31.it was way to tall, about 1800 rpm @ 70.changed out tranny with the 0.82. Its perfect now 2400 rpm @ 70.:)

My CR has a 351w with 400+ ponies and torque, I have a 3.27 rear and a
T-5z with the .64. I'm about 78 mph at 2k and it was a little steep until I
started adding 1 gallon of 110 avgas per about 10 gal of our 92 octane here
and it made all the difference for me. I can cruise at 60 no problem in 5th,
if I need some extra there is always 4th close by. Here on Oahu there aren't
many places to go much faster and if busted for over 80 it is jail time.
Nice weather but no roads and way to many 5 0's running around with their
lasers.

Mac VABCH 09-16-2008 03:36 AM

Get a six spd and have both...Mac

ERA713 09-16-2008 06:57 AM

1/1 to 1/0.64 was just to big a leap for me.I was lucky to find a buyer at an auto swap meet for my 0.64 tremec 600 for $400 less than I had paid so it.was'nt that big of mistake.I would recommend the 0.82.
