Toploader Jumping out of Gear

I have a freashly rebuilt close ratio (large output shaft) toploader in my Kirkham and it has a habit of jumping out of gear, most notably third. It tends to happen on the overrun when braking for a bend or junction.
Is this an adjustment issue or is there something amiss? The gear changes are smooth and baulk free, if a little slow.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Paul

Might be as simple as a linkage adjustment?.

You just need to adjust your linkages and check the stops also.

Disconnect your shifter boot from the floor and see what happens. My Tremec would pop out of third only when decelerating. A new "more flexible" boot solved the problem.

First thing to check is the shifter boot clearance. Often if the rubber boot is used it is so stiff it can force the transmission out of gear when letting off the throttle.
Just remove the boot & ring & go for a short drive to check it out. No matter what the boot is made of this is the best & easiest place to start as it also allows you to check the centering of the shifter in the cutout.
Hope this helps

Thanks. I never even considered the boot. :o
I think my lever handle is a little low in the tunnel i.e. the bend in the lever is quite close to the level of the tunnel. Therefore the boot is quite compresed and flat, which may add some extra stiffness to it.
Thanks again.

FB, that can absolutely do it. My TKO will pop out of third if the boot is not pulled up "over itself" thus spreading the circles out. Here's a shot showing you exactly what I mean -- the fix illustrated below only takes a few seconds.:3DSMILE:

Same thing happened on my Kirkham - the lever was hitting against the tunnel/boot.

During final assembly, I decided not to use the orginal rubber boot, had the upholstery guy make a leather boot from leftover skins.

I had the same problem with my shifter always popping out of 4th and reverse. I played around with the boot many times and in the end got tired of trying to drive with one hand on the shifter and the other on the wheel. Lets be honest..these things take two hands to control.
I just ordered and installed the Lokar 70-HRB leather shifter boot. I used the original ring from the rubber boot. It fit perfectly and matches the e-brake boot well.

I had a similar issue with my TKO-600. I bought a leather boot from JCWhitney and haven't had an issue since.

I did all of the above to no avail for popping out of third on deceleration. There was bad batch of third gears around that rebuilders were using in 2007 - 2008. Had to have Southern Automotive rebuild it. All is well now.
