Nj-dmv Title/reg Info
Hey Guys - Final assmebly is almost complete on my COBRA. Does anyone who has been through the NJ-Title-constructed vehicle process have any technical hints or issues that needed to be changed in order to title ..... I understand what I have to do regarding paperwork/ year of the engine block / where to go, but would like to hear from anyone who might have been turned down and what changes were needed to pass. I have all the usual installed components, wiring , brakes, fuel are all well mounted/bracketed. Thanks for the help in advance.

Three issues that they will fail you for out of the box:
1. Side pipes must have heat shields. 2. Car can have no exposed moving parts- which means if you have the double pusher fans mounted in front of the car and they are not covered by a grill, they will fail it. 3. Make sure you do not have wires (electric fuel pump?) running next to or tied to the fuel line. And I assume you are aware that the engine must be equipped with all the emissions equipment on it that it came from the factory with - which means if you have a 1974 or later block, you need cats. Other than that I would make sure everything else on the car is clean and in good working order, e.g., wipers, signals, lights, horn, mirrors, etc. I would also call or go to the station you are going to bring the car to and ask to speak to someone there, they may give you more specific info as to what they may look for. Good luck. One more thing, get your paperwork into Trenton as soon as you can because it can take several months for the paperwork to get processed and to get the safety inspection scheduled. |
Chaplin,
I believe Mr. Mustang posted somewhere that 74 blocks only had PCV valves. Roscoe |
Roscoe-
I am almost certain (99.99%) that 1974 was the first year for catalytic converters. If not 74, then 75, but I think it is 74. Let me see if I can find anything . . . Yup '74, see these links http://www.netstang.com/cat_conv_upgrade.htm http://www.uyseg.org/catalysis/catalytic/cat1.htm |
Chaplin,
Actually, in NJ, in regards to the Ford lineup of cars, it was not until mid 1975 that the Fords sold here were equipped with catalytic converters. In 1974, Ford was still shipping the cars with only the recirculating "PVC" assisted emissions system in place........... At least according to the AACA judging sheets for the 1974 T-Bird and Cougar..... Bill S. |
MrM-
That's interesting. I wonder how Ford got away with that b/c it was my understanding that federal EPA regs required cats on all 1974 model cars. But then again, Ford has done some odd things. |
Chaplin,
As with everything else, the emissions systems were a state by state item, at least for the 1974 model year.............. Bill S. |
I'm not Rick! I guess I need to change my signature. :)

I always thought it was a government mandate for 1976. Some manufacturers started earlier. Some got exemptions. (Jeep for one)
Has anyone come up with an early casting block to...pass around for initial testing? :) -steve in nj- |
I've got a 74 block in the garage on a stand.

Thanks Guys for all your info - greatly appreciated. I have all my components all ready including the 1970 spec engine. Just wanted to hear about any "oh by the ways" that might have come up during the final inspection/title process.
|
Oh, by the ways.....
Cody,
I was shot down during my titling inspection for not having "FULL LENGTH" heat shields on my Car. I am having a set fabbed now. I had a set of heat shields on the pipes but they said they wanted the whole pipe covered. YMMV as others have completed this process with shorter shields. Another issue raised was that my ride height was too low. My oil pan and bell housing were lower to the ground than the height of the sidewall of my tires (BFG 15"). I will address this with suspension adjustments. Again, YMMV as others did not have these sorts of problems. Robert |
Cody201 I thought that some of the motors had Air pumps, charcoal canisters, a closed fuel system. I would find the Ford book for the year of your motor and see what is on it. I know the cars and truck where different. I have an 85 C20 with a 350 that run on leaded gas, the last year. It has dual air pumps but no Cats and dual exhaust. Non venting Gas cap check on. ERA now has a gas cap inside the flip up filler. Tell us what happens. Rick Lake GOOD LUCK

I'am just wondering what happens is if you blow that old motor after the initial inspection, do you have to have and exact replacement or what??

I can get you registered legally with no inspection, no emmissions testing and no safety issues.
Send me a private e-mail when you are ready to go. |
If you can do that legally in the State of NJ, send me a private email and let my know how.
|
I have a 1968 302 block. I think the only emission equipment in 68 was a PCV valve???
|
Steve;
Would like to know the secret. I have a CSX car being delivered within the next couple of months and was wondering how I was going to do this. Feel free to pvt email me with more information. jim |
I am titled as a 66 Ford Convertible in NJ. Have not been to inspection yet. Should I expect to need full length pipe shields. thought this was a CT thing only.
|
USrowboy ,
If your already titled, then the inspection is a moot point, as you can register your car with either the "QQ" or "Limited useage" registration.......... Bill S. |
