ItBites, you are up to speed on your big block Chevy stuff....I still love the 427 Chevy engine, the 454 hit when emissions came on strong and aside from the LS6 (454/450 horse) the 454 was a low compression, medium performance engine, even in the 1970 Corvette, it only generated 390 horse and the '71 LS6 version only had 425 horse with 9.1 to 1 compression.
There was a truck 427 block that does not have "HI PERF" cast on it and it has a different deck hight.

The blocks you refer to are called "tall deck" and have certain advantages if you want to go to very large strokes. Yes they were originally only available in trucks (1T and bigger as I recall). All the aftermarket block guys offer a tall deck block as well as the std deck block. With a tall deck aftermarket thick-wall block, you can build over 700ci. Who would need nitrous or a blower?

My cobra has a 427 just for the purpose of making big high RPM power (>500 HP at the rear wheels - couldn't keep the tires from smoking on the rollers past 500 HP at 6000 RPM - I shift at 7400 RPM). The short stroke keeps me from having so much unusable tourque at lower RPMs and keeps the tires from roasting so much, but allows me to put power out once they are hooked up at speed. Some of the folks here could use some advice in this area. I recently considered doing a 540 (700+ HP), but decided the 427 was a better match for this car.

BTW I don't build the bowties only because they are cheaper; I just know how to get the power from them and I really like the head design over the blue oval. No offense, just my $.02.

Hmmmm,,,, I figured 17K about tops, looks like it will exceed that. Based on:
Lots of bidders and were coming down to the wire on this one. Wouldn't be surprised to see a "bidding war" break out at the last minute.

Still,,,,,,, I doubt it will move out of the "teens". Interesting watching it. I've seen FFR's go in the "teens" WITH a Ford motor. I'm not so sure THIS car says "that much" about the market over all.

As you say, this car may not be a good market value test for a Chevy powered cobra if it goes high teens or breaks into the 20's.

On the other hand it may be a decent example. You see, the buyer of a low priced cobra may not be the same type of Cobra conniseur as is the buyer of a $40000 Cobra. They may simply want a pretty car and for <$20000, you find those folks.

Ive seen a couple of FFRs (no offense to FFRs in general intended - these are specific examples) that were; how shall I say it? "less than refined" in appearance, but had Ford power (still a late model, stock, FI 302 is not really any more correct than a chevy in my opinion, but that has already been argued ad nauseum). Maybe I'm crazy, but I think if you parked my car (not perfect, but a pretty nice, finished, car) next to a low-buck Ford-powered replica and asked most passers-by, which car they would buy, given they are the same price, I think most would go for the nicer car, irrespective of engine make.

The reason I think this comparison may be valid is because the <$20000 buyer is closer to the general public than a Cobra conniseur.

I suspect that as the price line lowers, the spread between Chevy vs Ford powered decreases. A Kirkham, well done with a Chevy will be way less than one with a 427 Ford (likely $30000 difference or more?). A $15000 car with a Ford motor doesn't have $30000 to take from its value if it were to have a Chevy motor.


Just some thoughts to stir the pot, since my earlier post to this thread didn't return me any threats...

Itbites, no argument here! I think you summed it up very nicely. A Kirkham with a Chevy? Fuhgetaboudit, you'd loose your ass on re-sale.

Even I wouldn't put a Chevy motor in a Kirkham (unless I had eternally unlimited funds, in which case I would :) ). Just a talking point example to demonstrate a concept.

I can't blame a guy for putting a Chebbie engine in a car. I had almost forgotten all the crap one must endure making Ford horsepressure. I saw the all aluminum LS-1 motor on sale the other day for 16.5k... I see they have a 800 hp crate 572 coming out that HR magazine says will run on 91 octane.

Remembering that he emailed me and said he wanted $20,000 for the car to sell it on Ebay, take this into account.....

The car just "sold" for $18,281.81 at the final second to a bidder who has 0 feedback, 0 bought, 0 sold, and is a member for less then 30 days.

Dare I say the words "Schill" & "Relisting".......

I think you're right. I noticed the same things and thats why I put the (maybe?) in my post regarding the sale closure.
