Anyone want to bid . . . "no reserve"?
|
my guess?, rite at $20K
As long as no shills are involved ,this will be a good guage of the current market for a non-mainstream car, with a Chevy moter.
|
Help, my brain is running overtime thinking of the world of GM engines.....
Someone help me, before I do something bad to my new Cobra! Where's the support.........help me Klayfish! |
Steve - don't be surprised about seeing no reserves on eBay from time to time - a nice looking Shell Valley sold a few weeks ago for $20.5........
Mr. Bruce is right on both counts - non main stream + chevy motor = hard to sell...proceed with caution.....%/ |
Don't forget the automatic trans and 8.8 rear end. I'd be surprised if it went for $20K.
I'm guessing $16-17K max? |
Steve,
I appreciate the question for advice, but you'd also do very well to listen to the input of these other guys here. Lots of them have FAR more knowledge than I do. However, my opinion is going along with theirs. If...and that is an IF considering this is Ebay...this is legitimate, it's probably not a bad deal if it sells around $15K-$17K. But I'd be cautious. Buy it only if it is really what you want to do. It is a non "maintstream" Cobra, and the Chevy motor (regardless of how good or bad it is) is uncommon in Cobras. It can have a definite negative effect on the value. Not to mention the auto trans... not my personal favorite, but that's your call. If you don't care about people raising their eyebrows at car shows and such, or intend to resell the car any time soon, check it out a little further. Don't know much about the "402" Chevy block. Truck motor maybe??? Steve PS...unless you really think this is a can't miss opportunity for you, I'd wait. Carlisle is next weekend, and you will find more Cobra stuff there than you can possibly imagine. Not to mention probably several cars for sale that you can actually sit in and crawl all over. |
Klayfish......I do find all advice that I get here to be very good, including yours also.
I wasn't thinking of buying this one, just thought I would put it in the forum to see other people's opinions and views on this. I am certain, when I build it will have a ford block in it, this is for sure. I will definately be at that show next weekend in Carlislie, PA. And yes, my mind is set to "build" and not to buy one already made.......(God bless me with my decision) |
There are some of those Cobras out there like this. Nothing "wrong" with them per se if they are done right. Just less common and more of an unknown. Hell, the raffle car at DVSFIV is powered by a Viper V10. But that car has a history and is very well known. Once I win it in raffle, I'll let you check it out. ;)
Just pray for good weather at Carlisle. There's been a pattern of.... oh never mind, you'll see. Steve |
The Carlisle show you want is the Kitcar show on May 21, 22, 23
Next wext weekend is the Compact var show. Larry:) |
Are "Var's" kinda like snipes?
|
You got some kinda problem with compact cars??
Sincerely, Vin Diesel :D :D Yeah...I meant the following weekend. Do'h! |
I saw one a few years ago same color and auto and everything. Sold for $14.5k
|
.........T - 7 days, and 4 hours
21 bids are in and the car is at $11,100 right now! %/ |
The Chevy 396 was opened up to 402 for 1970, they never changed the designation as the 396 had a great reputation.
Heads and intake are all interchangeable with the 396, 427 and 454. The Chevy engine will hurt the value, and I'm a Chevy big block fan. Better to have a Ford small block than any Chevy big block in a Cobra. |
I emailed the person who is selling this car on ebay last night, they told me that they are looking for $20,000 for a final bidding price to sell it.
In perspective, would anyone buy it for 20.0k, yes or no? In my opinion, for what it is worth, I would not buy it.... |
I think the 396 came in THREE variations. The 402 being one of them, and yup, Chev STILL called it a 396. What was the THIRD variation of this engine?
Back in the day,,,,,, GTO should have called their new 400 by the old name, 389. |
Don't know of a third version of the 396 BBC. You are right the 402 is an overbore 396 and was sold as "396" in the early 70s.
Are you sure there was a third version? |
If it is mechanically sound and well assembled, it is still a lot of performance for the dollar. Would I pay $20k for it. A few years ago I would have when I was looking for a Cobra. I wouldn't now since I ould really only trade up to a JBL.
|
Not at all sure about the "third version" of the 396,,,,, but I THOUGHT there was one. Trucks maybe.......
|
BTW, Im pretty sure you cannot "bore" a 402 to get a 454.
The 396 has a unique small bore block and a short stroke crank shared with the 427 (internall balanced). The 427 uses the 396 crank and shares the large bore block with the 454. The 454 uses the 427 large bore block and adds a long stroke crank (externally balanced and unique to the 454). So neither the block nor the crank from the 402 (396) should be able to build 454 ci. Not sure I would trust this guy's mechanical savvy. If it is really bored that big, I would suspect holes in the cylinder walls :) BTW, if this car doesn't go past $13000, I'll buy it and let my wife have it. |
