NJ registration

Hi
I am ready to get the paper work on my car.
can anyone tell me how much will it cost to register the car and inspect it.
I have the MSO, I know someone who did not have the MSO and titled the car in a nother state and all he needs to do now is get NJ plates.
It cost him about $300. Is it easier to do it the way he did it?

Thanks for your help.

HHHHHHmmmmmmm, a Cobra in Denville, who would have thought .

As for your question, the days of olde where you could use an out of state title service to get around paying your fair share of taxes to the fine folks in Trenton are long gone. NJMVS is hip to all of the title companies that offer you "vintage" titles for just a few dollars. Attempt to pull the wool over their eyes now and your risk not only a hefty fine, but the forfeiture of your new roadster.

So, for now I shall point you towards the proper (and only way to do so from scratch these days) way to title your car
http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/SpecialVehicles.htm

Call (888) 486-3339 and ask for the "kit car package", follow the instructions to the letter. When all is in order, request a date at the Morristown specialty inspection station (the old DMV inspection station just off Ridgedale Ave) and you'll be good to go.

Hope you find this helpful.

thanks

Hi guys,
thanks for the quick response.
By the way.
the person who titled his car at a different state did it 3-4 months ago and got his plates, I think he did it in rhode island.

You want to risk it, go for it, but expect that sooner or later NJ MVS will be knocking on your door, will pull your registration, confiscate your car, and fine you to the tune of 10K. Don't think it can happen to you, I know a certain owner who tried this in Rockaway Township just last winter and almost lost his car if it was not for a large law firm located on RT53 in Denville just before the railroad under pass.

Hi Bill.
you sound like someone who used to live in this area, did you.
I would most likely do what you suggested.
I don't want to risk 2 years of sweat, and hard work. I have a classic roadster, probably one of thier last customers.
As you know, they went out of bussiness and still owe me more then $7,000 in parts which I will most likely never see.
I have been through enought boolsheet!!

Yup, spent a good deal of my life just west of your current location. You need to hook up with the rest of the Jersey cobra guys at the monthly Cobra breakfast in Chester, NJ.........Think it may be next Sunday..........Tomorrow of course is a large Cobra gathering at Washingtons Crossing (PA side), you might want to check it out in the NJ Cobra forum on this site........

Any info on registering in NJ under "Collector Status" with a letter of limited production from the manufacturer?

(Anyone have a sample "Letter of Limited Production" ??)

Are you sure you need this? Did someone tell you this over the phone, or did you get it in the official package from the NJ MVS?

You cannot register a new build cobra as a collector car. That category is not open to cars that have a salvage, or reconstructed vehicle title. All new builds in Jersey are titled as reconstucted vehicles, so you're out of luck on the collector registration.

That rule is relatively new (within the last 3 years or so). It used to be that nearly evey cobra build was registered as a collector car, which allowed you to avoid inspection/emissions. Previous builds with current collector registration are grandfathered, but when those cars or sold, or when new cars are built, they must have standard registrations.

If it was titled in another stated first, you might be able to do it but even that would be a gamble.

In the end it will be more trouble trying to circumvent the system that it will be to follow the rules. As long as you are using a vintage block, it should not be a big deal to get a car on the road that will comply with all the rules. If you want to use a modern engine, or a new crate motor, all bets are off as they will require your car to be emissions tested to the year of the block.

uggh!

I am just starting this process on my 1997 built Factory Five I just purchased from P.A. It's titled in P.A. right now & has temp plates on it , but I need to get it registered here. The engine is a 1996 302 ford & I am in a panic that we will have to sell the car now. The only paper work I have is the PA title & bill of sale. Nothing else. Is this even possible to register? We save up 4 years to purchase this car & I researched everything. Except of course these strict laws of NJ.

Since the car is already titled in another state (in this case PA), NJ will accept the title at "face value".

How is the current PA title written?

Year
Make
Model
VIN

No reason to panic, there are simple solutions to any all all potential issues you might run across.

Question about build and NJ registration/inspection...

If I where to build a new BDR with a supercharged Coyote engine, ODB-2 port and exhaust sensor, and an under car cross-pipe exhaust with muffler (basically making it a modern car exhaust) would I have any issues or have to jump through any hoops to register it?

Oh, and are there still routine get togethers in Chester? I'm close...

Yes, you'll need catalytic converters in the system in order to pass the enhanced inspection.......

And yes, the breakfasts take place on a regular basis, you just missed this months which was held last Sunday.

Is there a schedule or email list to get on? I'd love to come to the next one.

And thanks for the info.
