58 mm Berg IDA Carbs--Here They Are

Well, Berg finished my 58 mm IDA carbs today. Now I've got to get them assembled, on my car, and dialed in--the journey begins.

If I can get them to run half as good as they look I should be in good shape.

very nice, I want some!

Stentor,
Very nice! You need to make sure the stock hood scoop is going to work, you may need to get the extra wide version sold by Cobra Restorers in aluminum. See my gallery for pictures. In 12 years, no one has commented to me if they noticed any difference when looking at the car.

I posted this in the other Weber threads but wanted to make sure you saw it, my reply from Berg:

Mr. Sorkey, Our Berg IDA carbs have the same stud pattern as the original Weber 48 IDA. The top of the intake manifold needs to be opened up for the larger throttle plate in our carbs.

Sincerely,

Al,

Thanks for posting the message from Berg. I have confirmed that the standard 48 IDA FE manifold will work just fine (consistent with the message you received). I have already had the machine work done on the manifold to match the Berg 58 mm carbs.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the hood scoop. I went with the shorter velocity stacks to try to help with hood clearance. However, the diameter of the stacks is almost 4" at the top--so they're pretty wide.

I will keep you posted as I try to get things together over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks,

Stentor

How much machine work was required to fit the 58's? Can you post a photo of the finished manifold?

Thanks.

Snakebit 10-01-2009 11:23 AM

WOW those things are huge! You will have to post a sign at car shows "DANGER, when engine is running small dogs and children may by sucked into the intake scoop"!

Al,

I don't have a picture of the finished manifold yet--I will post one as soon as I can. I have been told that the manifold came out fine--and I believe the machining cost was around $200 to $300.

One step closer--now I've got the 58 mm Berg IDAs mounted on the manifold and ready to go.

Dayum! Better keep small animals from getting sucked into your hood scoop.

BTW, they look great on that intake.

Bellissimo! Works for me! Get her mounted up!

RodKnock 10-08-2009 08:27 PM

They're so big, that if they were white, I'd have to pee in them.

You have me thinking Webers now, though mine would be the bidet-sized 48's.

RodKnock 12-07-2009 04:59 PM

Stentor, any updates? Do they fit under the hood? If so, what mods did you have to make?

Stentor 12-07-2009 05:35 PM

Rod,

I did get the 58 IDAs in the car and am working on getting the carbs fine tuned. So far so good.

With the angled manifold and short velocity stacks it doesn't look like I am going to have any hood clearance issues.

I will keep folks updated as I fine tune them over the coming weeks.

Here they are in the car.

Just awesome. Good luck with the tuning and I can't wait to hear about your driving thoughts. Please do update. Maybe down the road, I may go for some Weber 48's, not sure yet.

How did these work out after being dialed in? They sure look great!

Rick,

Thanks for your message. I haven't been on the forum much lately (busy with work).

I have been very pleased with the Berg 58mm IDAs. It took a while to get them dialed in; but, once tuned they've been great (no problems or issues so far). And the 58s work nicely on the bored/stroked FE.

Best,

Kevin
