I have had a chance to get home and put a couple shots of jet fuel in the tank which cleared things up a bit. I do recall there may be one other reason for the irreverent coolant posing as fuel. Two problems can occur with the intake manifold. It is much more prone to warping if not torqued in the proper sequence and if you use the cork as a seal at the front and back of the intake to the block. The cork has a tendency to "hold" the intake out giving false torque readings and can also cause misalignment. Most builders will just use a big bead of high temp gasket maker instead of the cork.
I may be back if I have enough fuel to support the after burners. :p |

If you want some thoughts on your problem we will be here tomorrow after aprox 1030am. or----- You have a on going reacurrance of the same series of problems---you need a fresh slant on things--if you are getting that much coolant in that amount of time, if it is a crack in a head or block you should have combustion traces in your cooling system Jerry |
Alright. I decided I would like to dive into this project of disassembling on Sunday morning. If anybody is interested in lending a hand I would be very happy to have you.
I'm still very bummed out. Go figure. Hopefully it's just a head gasket or a warped head. If it's a cracked block I will be down for the count for a long time. Lets all hope for the best. Get gaskets tomorrow!! I looked up the ones I used & they did not have the little "speed groove" in the coolant passage area, hopefully you can find some that don't have that. I think the # was Fel-pro # 1250 Michael |

I wish I could make it Chris, but I simply can not. Let me know if it turns into a Monday evening though. If you replace a head gasket don't forget to paint it with silver oxide or mr gasket copper. Good luck.

Between you and Rich and MD you have good people on the problem. I had the right side head off my 351 C last year. Not a bad job it is just the worry about scratching something. I'm sure you guys know already ( only a reminder) to pull the block plugs. As long as you are looking for coolant tracks that will keep everything nice and dry when you pull the head. Some good suggestions here. With a little thrashing you could be back on the road in a day. If next Saturday is nice, I'll be up at Elkhart Lake and the other guys'll probably be drag racing but if the weather's crappy, we could all get together again and drop Ed's motor in your car, slap your heads and intake on it and you'd be ready to go. If not Saturday, maybe Sunday. Meantime, you could pull the intake and heads off your motor and see just where the problem is. If you use Ed's short block and yours can be sleeved, you could still enjoy your car for the rest of the fall and reinstall your motor over the winter. Minimal down time and minimal expense. Whaddaya say? Or...we could put Ralph's motor in your car and paint it half red... Lowell |
Oh, BTW, Chris,
If you haven't already, pull the drain plug on the side of the block and drain all the water. Then turn the motor over a couple of times to push all the water out of that cylinder, squirt in some oil (wouldn't hurt to squirt some oil in all the cylinders while you're at it) and turn it over a couple of more times. It would really suck to have the rings rust in the cylinder after everything else. Lowell |
Nice offer Ed, excellent suggestions Lowell. We still have a couple months+ of driving weather. Jerry has another great suggestion with sleeving the cylinder and while you’re at it we could check the bearings and go thru the bottom end, get a set of heads you like and reassemble everything. Depending on the heads you choose I bet you could get all this done for less than $3k and have a fresh engine in for the spring. We could call it daisy or whatever the name of a blue flower is. :LOL:
