120 HP for $100 in 20 minutes
120 HP for $100 in 20 minutes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a follow up, I just bought my Backdraft at the end of August 2008 and never had it tuned. I thought it was pretty fast, but I took it to Frank at Komet Motorsports for a dyno run. Turned out the primary and secondaries on the carburator were not opening all the way and the float on the carburator was too low.
First run was a paltry 230hp (for this engine) at the rear wheels. In 20 minutes, they found an additional 120 hp. We were at 350hp at the rear wheels and we hadn't touched the timing, finished the adjusting the carbs or fine tuning the engine, but I had to leave.
He found 120hp for $100 in 20 minutes- not bad at all. You lose about 15-20% of HP after the flywheel, so the engine is putting about 430hp now. Frank thinks we can find at least another 25 to 50 hp in there. I will bring it back in spring to finish the job. You should stop by before you head out to Byron next year, it should be worth a few tenths.

A similar thing happened to me in October. I have a mildly tuned, small cammed engine that only made about 270 rwhp. I remembered that early Vipers had a problem wherein they didn't achieve WOT w/o modifying their throttle cable. My Cobra's secondaries didn't fully open and as soon as we adjusted the linkage we did a 360 rwhp pull!! Now we're in search of more.....

Jim / Jerry- Thanks for the info! I've never heard of Komet Motorsports. Have they been in business long?
BTW: Where is Foundry Street? Can you give me direction from, say.........Main Street and Rt. 31?

Thanks Eddie.
Heck, my wife's office is very close to this place (right off of Dean St.) and she couldn't even tell me where Foundry was. -And she grew up in St. Charles!

that map is ok---its North of 64, east of randall
We will be there tomorrow morning running the 427 stroker in a Shelby GT 500 1968 Mustang
They have been there for around 2 years now===we also use another shop in St Charles called Total Power that has been around a couple years longer.
Both shops have Mustang dynos, Komets being a floor mount that will do all wheel drive and Total Power having a raised unit that will do something like 17-1800 hp and over 200 mph

I've heard of Total Power but I've never been there. I generally take my car to St. Charles Motorsport (which isn't far from Komets) just off of 64 west of Randall. They have a couple of good mechanics there, and are familiar with SPF's, but they don't have a dyno. -They used to do the SPF engine installs for D&M a few years back.
Good info to have though. Hard to beat a dyno-tune.
-Thanks guys.

Jim- I see the photo of the cobra, but I don't see the "dog". -Where is the dog?
Nice looking house by the way. Are you in one of the new developments west of Randall?

Pic and dog
Terry,
Thanks for the compliment on the house, yes, I am just west of Randall, about a 1/4 mile from Sid (if you know him from the WCCC). I happened to be washing the car the weekend after we got the dog and took a bunch of pics and saved the whole role as "cobra and new dog", I just posted the pic as a test, guess it worked, I do have some of the pup but I can't seem to get the or any others to download.

Jim, do you know exactly what was changed? It sounds like the butterflys and float level, but anything else?
Any info might help some guys sort out their tuning issues.

We should have a west side get together and do burn outs on Jim's street. I'll probably get blamed for it!! And I can't even do burn outs!!!

Floats and butterflies
Hey Gotsnake,
I have no idea, I don't know what a floats or butterflys are. I am an idiot with that stuff, I just like driving the darn thing.
He did adjust the float and the primary and secondaries on the carb because they were not opening all the way or the right way. He started messing with the timing but we ran out of time.
He also did something with the choke, basically turned it off. I don't really drive it in cold weather, but when it sits for a while, I have to feather the gas for a few seconds when I start it up, where before I could just turn the key and go. He said it would help with the float adjustement, I have no idea how or why, but you might.
Feel free to call Frank at Komet. Hope that helps,
Jim
Oh, and Sid, feel free to do burn outs in front of my house, but for goodness sake, WASH IT FIRST!
