Air Cleaner/Hood Clearance issues
Anybody have this problem??...
I have a 351W in my EM Cobra. I installed a Weiand Stealth intake, and a Demon (Road Demon) carb.
I am using an oval "COBRA" air cleaner.
MY HOOD RECESS LIP (at the cowl area) IS HITTING ON TOP OF AIR CLEANER.
I eliminated the spacer between the carb and air cleaner bottom plate, ...Still not enough room.
I recessed the bolt heads on the bottom of the plate (one of which was hitting the float adjustment on the carb) that run up through for the top wing nuts ...STILL TO TALL....
Only thing left to do is CUT out holes for the float adjustments to actually protrude INTO the base plate, and possibly grind the lip on the bottom plate down also....Adding some gasket material between the plate and the carb.... This SHOULD do it.
Question is,... will this effect the carb breathing in any negetive manner??
This is NOT a high rise intake,.... I didn't think I'd even come close to having this problem since you can jam a big block down in there ........ It's getting frustrating...

From a friendly church cusser -- I couldn't find an oval air cleaner with a drop base --- had to continue to use a round drop base (has 1 7/8" drop) that probably came from a Corvette and a round air cleaner (also installation of Edelbrock carb added fraction of an inch over the old Holley). New K & N product is not period correct -- but lets air in from the top. But -- nothing in my drivetrain is "correct." Good Luck.

I had to cut the base on my oval air cleaner to allow the float adjustment screws to protrude up into it.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies,...
Definately makes me feel better about defacing the air cleaner plate.

You recently posted some pictures of your air filter setup but I can't find that thread now. What was the name of the thread? I also have a similar problem and was considering doing something like you have done but I don't believe that it is necessary to "re-invent the wheel".

Sorry, I thought that it was you. Does anyone know which thread contained a full set of pictures of a modified air filter which was lowered to improve hood clearance. The bottom part was cut and re-welded. Holes were drilled for the float adjustment screws.
I looked at this thread a couple of days ago but I can't find it now.

Wayne,
No, It wasn't me. Although I HAVE drilled holes and even ground the lower "lip" for MORE clearance.
I just went to the Myrtle Beach car show today. Several Cobras were there. I noticed a couple with modified bottom plates. Although most of the cars engines sit further forward than my EM.
Good luck finding the link, and when you do Please forward it to me. I'd like to see the set-up also.

Bad enough that a bunch of us have air filter problems, now when someone posts a series of pictures showing how he modified his filter, the thread disappeared.
Am I nuts or did anyone else see that thread last Wednesday or Thursday? It was at the time that Brent indicated that he had to change servers so maybe it got lost in the shuffle. I sure hope that whoever it was that posted those pictures would do so again.
Since no one has responded in Shop Talk, I am going to open a thread in All Cobra Talk to see if I can get those pictures and description again.
