Default Slop in steering linkage

I have the 2 x4 frame, tubular front end and "Ididit" steering. I don't know the technical term but following the steering from the firewall for about 2 feet there is a univerasal joint which then goes down to the steering gear box. About half way between the universal and gear box there is another joint with a rubber canvas connector. Anyway at this joint there is about 5 degrees slop at this joint. Is this normal? If not how do you take up the slop? Thanks for any help. Chas
