Default Slop in steering linkage

I have the 2 x4 frame, tubular front end and "Ididit" steering. I don't know the technical term but following the steering from the firewall for about 2 feet there is a univerasal joint which then goes down to the steering gear box. About half way between the universal and gear box there is another joint with a rubber canvas connector. Anyway at this joint there is about 5 degrees slop at this joint. Is this normal? If not how do you take up the slop? Thanks for any help. Chas

That joint is called a coupler. It should not have play in it. It is designed to isolate vibration through the steering column. In most cases you can replace the disk if it is worn or broken down. The only way that I could see this is if an old one was installed in the build, because they last forever!

Thanks for the reply. I first thought it was the rubber deteriating but looking closer, it is under the rubber. It is in the where the shaft comes up and into the coupler. I felt under there looking for a set screw or something but couldn't feel anything. I tried to look on my B&B build Cd for a better understanding but I can't get to the parts list. Chas

It's really a rag-joint. It's probably a good idea to have one, but most Cobras don't use them. Using them gives you a more steady feel to your wheel, not using a rag-joint can contribute to the dreaded 70 mph shimmy, but not always. If you can't fix the slack, weld it or bolt it tight.

I eliminated the rag joint by replacing it with a universal joint from a place called Stock Car Products.
Good Luck

Thanks for both suggestions. I will get under it and see which way to go.
