Your advise was spot-on, it was the shift finger design/machining. I contacted Rob at Tremec, and he sent me a modified finger. I just finished assembling it, and on the bench it shifts beautifully - no more premature lug disengagement. Unfortunately I'll have to wait a few more months to road test it.
