I think there are a lot of other solutions before you go down that path. Tire type is probably the largest. If you are running BF Goodrich Radial T/A's and have 600 hp, it really isn't going to matter what width tire you buy. You are probably screwed. On the other hand, if you are running something that has a tread wear rating of 80 or so, you probably aren't having too many issues depending on what you are using the car for.

Lots of variables here and tire width to a degree isn't the highest priority.
