If you can hook up with someone local and beg a ride for an hour or so, you'll probably get the best read on what your own ears can handle. I've found, about an hour into a trip in the car, that the noise actually smarts a bit. One solution is to use some foam earplugs, which I expect I'll start doing on longer drives. The shock waves from the side exhausts actually concuss everything around them--that's why all those car alarms go off! (Big fun!)
