Brent,
Yes,it's starting with 24 degrees,above 800 rpm the retarder cuts out an gives full advance.
The hemi headed Boss seems to like this arrangement,and MSD has a diode to install before the voltage regulator to help with the run on.
If you are getting backfires you might be blowing out your power valve.
