Question 429 what manual trans.

Hi Friends,
Iīm buying a 429 engine for my Cobra, but I would like put a manual transmission. The seller of engine said me somethings that I donīt know what is better.
I thinking buy a TKO600. There is another one better or that fits on 429?

Please could you comment about the text below?

"You will need flywheel for an internally balanced (no counterweight)neutral balance set-up.Please be careful about what you choose.I will help you get what you need, because it can get tricky. The engine block year isnt the important thing, but the crankshaft is.The crank was manufactured in 1969,and they were used only with automatics,so to use with a manual, you can go one of 2 ways, both will work.Either you can machine the crank for the 1.375 pilot bearing,or get a pilot bearing with the center hole diameter the same size as the input shaft size, and just turn down the outside diameter to 1.250 for an interference fit.I can also do this for you, this is what I did with my other 429 engine to use with my 4 speed top loader with big input shaft.I plan to use with my 184 teeth flywheel, however some say it wont work, I soon will know! "

If someone have another idea, please feel free to comment.

Thanks a lot,
Regards,
Cristiano

A nice 4-speed toploader seems like the obvious choice. With all the torque of a BBF you don't need a five or six speed trans, unless boiling the tires every time you hit the gas in 1st and 2nd is your goal.

Ask for more definition on the crank. I thought all the 385 series cranks accepted a standard pilot bearing like Napa part BRG B66067. This is what I use with my 514/TKO. 1.8525OD .695ID

I also agree that a 5 speed is really not necessary, but if you go with 4 gears, make sure you have a high enough rear gear to keep you under 2500 rpms in 4th at 70mph or it will drive you crazy.

My Superformance has a 3.73 rear gear and TKO with .68OD which works OK for me... !st is nice in heavy traffic, but useless otherwise.. I launch in 2nd at the drag strip just because 1st is so low.

Hear is a handy application when playing around with gear ratios
