The two big lugs on the solenoid are battery and starter. The small ones run to the ignition switch and the + coil. What happens when you start cranking is the line to the coil gets straight 12V from the battery lead instead of running though the ballast resistor. This contact is open when not cranking.
The +coil basically gets two wires, whether connected at the coil or somewhere else. One from the starter solenoid and one from the ballast resistor. The -coil goes to the post on the side of the distributor where the condensor attaches.
