It's one thing to set a big, big block in the engine bay, stuff the rear with 3.55's or so, and then use the .82 hi gear.
It is another altogether with smaller stuff.
iwanta, stick with your combo, especially if you enjoy hi speed hiway cruising...do NOT be confused about that. My Unique with a 331 has always used the .64 hi gear Tremec 3550, 28" tall tires (275/60/15), and 4.09:1 in the rear, and I'm here to tell you that the combo is excellent and driveable beyond belief. I originally had a crate 302 in the car - and the 5th. gear roll-on at 75 mph just didn't have the oomph I wanted...enter the stroker. Now?- kicks a$$ from 75 to...well, to whatever speed you want.
Around town, the Tremec's 3.27 1st. gear has always been for show, light 'em up at will; but get into second and up and just see if you can wipe the grin off. Steady 18 - 19 mpg at 85 mph, right around 2600 rpm, and right at the point the cam starts to work (Ford Motorsports Z-303).
If you want to use the car for genuine hiway crusing, and trips longer than 30 miles, you stay with the deeper hi gear. You are assured you won't regret it.
