.64 to .82 5th gear swap on tko600
Maybe one of you guys know the answer. Tried calling tremec but was put on terminal "hold" then got disconnected. Tried searching all over this website but could not find the answer.
Is it possible to swap out the .64 5th for a .82?
Thank you for any and all advice

JB, not sure of the TKO600, but I plan on having the 4 gear in the toploader I will be using in the CSX I have on order, changed from the 1.1 to the .82. I don't see any reason why any transmission could not be worked on. Maybe try David Kee for some advise on your special needs.

The Standard Transmission guys know their stuff.
So, just so everyone knows, They said Yes the gears can be swapped out.
They are calling back with the parts list and price.

Would like to get the details when you have them. I couldn't get my hands on a .82 when I needed it so I got the .6x
Please PM me when you find out.

I just installed a new TKO600 in my BB. Originally I had a TKO and .64 overdrive and let Liberty Transmission (Michigan) talk me into a .84. What a perfect match it was, I love it. No more luging around in 5th gear and it is still great on the highway. I don't think that you will be dissapointed. good luck!

Hmmmm, I didn't know you could change a top loader 4th gear to anything other than 1 to 1 (which is stock).
No question about one thing: The .6 OD is worthless, the .8 rocks!

What rear end gear are you guys running with the
TKO 600 0.64 OD ? I'm planning on using the TKO 600 0.64 OD with a 3.73 rear end gear... At 70 mph the engine should turn at about 2100 rpm which I thought would be ok.. I'll be running a 331 stroker with a 280HR Magnum Comp Cam.. Am I dreaming??

iwanta,
get the .82 it will be much more usable and leave at about 2500 on the freeway. The 331 will probably be happier with it.

iwanta,
second the motion on the .82. My 418 Windsor (3.73, .6 od) revs at about 2100 at 75 mph, but it doesn't like to accelerate from down there, and pings pretty bad on a hot day. I suspect my setup has a bit more torque than your 331. On the other hand, if you can run 100 mph all the time, you might love it!

Even with a good low rpm torquey motor the .6 will still be a drag until your really hauling down the highway.
The guys are totally right, .8 IS the way to go, MUCH better throttle response at cruise speeds.

iwanta,
I would go with the .82.
I have a T-56 so I have both of those gears.Running a 3.73rear.
The .64 is great on the road when I get into speeding ticket range.Other than that .82 is the gear of choice.
The drop in rpm between your 4th an 5th will have you wishing you had something inbetween or a .82 fifth.
When I get into 6th ,.64,I really have to becareful. If I don't,I find myself at 100-110 mph.Which is just right for the .64.

Without ever working on a tremec, I would guess that you would need to swap the countershaft gear as well as the OD gear. It may be better to buy a new 600 and sell your current one.

4th gear in a toploader (non-OD version) happens when the output shaft couples directly to the input shaft, I.E. 1 : 1 ratio. There are no gears involved for 4th gear. What ford did with their OD version of the toploader, is to make 3rd gear the OD gear, less than 1, and then switch the shifter rods on the tranny, so when you went into third gear, you were really using the old 4th gear, 1 : 1, and then when you went to the new 4th gear, you were going into the old 3rd gear, which was now geared to be an overdrive. The problem with these trannys is that #1) the gear spacing is too wide for a performance usage, and #2) the trannys themselves are weak.
If you want an "OD" like toploader, get a wide ratio version, with a 2.78 first, and then get 3.07 / 2.88 rears, and you'll have in essence a "OD - Like" toploader, maintaining strength and some performance usage, with some economy at cruising

Why not the TKO 500
I'm running a 3.54 rear gear w/ a TKO 500 which has a OD of .68. My rear tires are 295/50 x 15 (26.6" dia.). I must be the only guy who thinks this is a good combo. At 70 on the hwy, I tac about 2200 RPM. Plus I like the lower first gear for the quickness off the line. First gear is good to 40+ @ 6000 RPM. I appear to be alone here, but oh well.

Ron,
You are right on the money. If I could cruise at 70mph at 2200 I'd be happy. I cruise at 70mph at 1800. My TKO-600 along with some of the other guy's are .64 OD not .68 as your's is. Your combo seem's fine. Mine on the other hand will ping at the slightest incline unless I am going 80-plus mph. I have 3:31 gears with 295/50 tires. Other than the OD I love the trans.

It's one thing to set a big, big block in the engine bay, stuff the rear with 3.55's or so, and then use the .82 hi gear.
It is another altogether with smaller stuff.
iwanta, stick with your combo, especially if you enjoy hi speed hiway cruising...do NOT be confused about that. My Unique with a 331 has always used the .64 hi gear Tremec 3550, 28" tall tires (275/60/15), and 4.09:1 in the rear, and I'm here to tell you that the combo is excellent and driveable beyond belief. I originally had a crate 302 in the car - and the 5th. gear roll-on at 75 mph just didn't have the oomph I wanted...enter the stroker. Now?- kicks a$$ from 75 to...well, to whatever speed you want.
Around town, the Tremec's 3.27 1st. gear has always been for show, light 'em up at will; but get into second and up and just see if you can wipe the grin off. Steady 18 - 19 mpg at 85 mph, right around 2600 rpm, and right at the point the cam starts to work (Ford Motorsports Z-303).
If you want to use the car for genuine hiway crusing, and trips longer than 30 miles, you stay with the deeper hi gear. You are assured you won't regret it.

Thanks for the parts info. Next time I need to pull the trans I think I'll make the swap to the .82
