We have a big baddassed Kirby. Thought it was the ultimate. Here's what we did when we got the Dyson (the big sucker...purple DC-15 Animal version): We did a good sized patch of our berber (ought to be easy to vacuum, right?) with the whole house vacuum. Then we put a new bag in the Kirby and went over the same area and checked the bag...a good amount of dirt not picked up by the whole house vac.
Then we went over it with the Dyson...sucked up dirt, hair and gawd only knows what else on what should've been clean carpet.
I thought it was hype...it ain't.

We have the same model and have had the same experience. I have heard of people breaking this or that attachment but what is not breakable? Can always buy a replacement part. That power head attachment kicks butt on stairs and upholstery.
