Need a new vacuum cleaner....
My 20 Year Old Sears vacuum cleaner finally took a dump.
What should we replace it with. I'm really leaning toward a Dyson. Have I fallen into the publicity trap?
Give me some ideas, upright/canister it doesn't matter.

Find something that can suck for $200 and buy it. Anymore and you are getting F... uh, well, you get the idea.

What ever you do, don't buy a Hoover upright. I believed Consumers Report on the POS and bought one for about $260. It lasted 3 mos untill the gear driven beater bars jammed. Was going to cost nearly $200 to get it fixed. I tossed it in the dumpster and bought a RIccar which is American made and never misses a beat.

I went to Sears and bought the cheapest Kenmore model they had and it has lasted for over three years an no problems. I have a small hand vac made by Knemore that I use in the cars and I have had it for almost 8 years an no problems. I figured if the cheap Kenmore house vac goes bad I can buy another one now as long as it has lasted and not mess with the expensive warranties.

We have a Dyson, purple. We have 'issues' with fur in the house. So far, it's the best vacuum. A little bulky, doesn't fit under furniture too well. But empties easily, and keeps sucking as advertised. Had a Hoover thing that they claimed was the same as a Dyson, it wasn't. We gave it away to someone with no pets, hardwood floors and I think even they were unhappy with it.
Had a 1970's electrolux cannister that still worked fine, good vacuum, just all the plastic handles and wheels finally just wore out. Wish we had it back. At farm auctions they come up every once in a while, but they go high.

Check out the annual Consumers Reports book. If I recall correctly, they rated Hoover quite high. No doubt it varies from model to model but I know that I have an Electrolux that I thought was good. Then my girlfriend moved in and brought her Hoover with her. I was shocked. It put my Electrolux to shame. The Hoover was probably $125 and the Electrolux probably cost me $800.

We have a Ricard. Bought it like 6-7 years ago and have beat the crap out of it. The thing never dies and we have 2 dogs and a cat, so hair is an issue.
It wasn't cheap, like $500, but worth every penny after the Hoover melted down when hair clogged the motor filter and the plastic melted.

I have a Kirby, with lots of attachments. It cost almost as much as my Cobra. TO much, wouldn't buy one again, all though it is a sweet machine. A used one might be a good buy, they last forever.
The only thing 'Lucas' made that didn't suck was a vacuum...

The Dyson is worth every penny...get the "animal" version of whichever model appeals to you even if you have no aminals.
We have a big baddassed Kirby. Thought it was the ultimate. Here's what we did when we got the Dyson (the big sucker...purple DC-15 Animal version): We did a good sized patch of our berber (ought to be easy to vacuum, right?) with the whole house vacuum. Then we put a new bag in the Kirby and went over the same area and checked the bag...a good amount of dirt not picked up by the whole house vac.
Then we went over it with the Dyson...sucked up dirt, hair and gawd only knows what else on what should've been clean carpet.
I thought it was hype...it ain't.

Yup...totally agree. Wife and Labs unwilling to wear sneekers make that a difficult sell at the current time.

We have the same model and have had the same experience. I have heard of people breaking this or that attachment but what is not breakable? Can always buy a replacement part. That power head attachment kicks butt on stairs and upholstery.

Jamo, did the same thing, we did the "kid test".
Placed one of my son's GI Joe attachments on the carpet and vacumed it with the kirby, minced it to little pieces.
We now have a Dyson.
