I used a new T-5 tranny in my car and when I first started driving it after the build I had a leak from the tail shaft. I assumed it was a bad seal and installed two or three seals in an attempt to fix the problem. The leak persisted. I finally replaced the slip yoke on the drive shaft with a new one. That fixed the problem.

I don't think a welder is the answer to your problem.
