I've had many good experiences on eBay and just 2 bad ones.
One bad one was buying a beta vcr (go ahead and laugh). It was damaged in shipping by the post office. I figured that since the seller insured the shipping, I could just walk into the post office with my eBay receipt and get the cash, so I could bid on a replacement. But nooooooo. The post office wanted me to get a repair estimate (does anyone fix 15 year old betas?), file paper work and hold onto the item & shipping box and try to act as an arbitrator between the seller and me. The post office wanted to put most of the blame on the seller for inadequate packing and pass the repair bill onto them. It seemed that the post office is convinced that people are trying to use eBay sales as a way of committing shipping insurance fraud. And they are willing to hold onto the items with the paper work for months, just to collect the names to see if the same shippers or buyers are up to something illegal.
However, I do suspect that the shipper could have packed the item better.
So it's not just eBay and Paypal that might give you problems. A U.S. Government agency, the post office, can stick it to you as well. I took it upon myself and managed to "fix" the beta vcr myself to get some stuff off some old tapes I wanted. However my original plan was to resell the beta after I was done with it, but it is obviously banged up and only partially working, so that plan went out the window too.
But I want to re-iterate. I have had many good experiences with eBay and Paypal.
