In sum, it is not a original cobra grille. Correct?

Oh well, I was hoping.

Also, what's the best way to determine the material it's constructed from?

Thanks,

Sorry if we confused you. The grill is for a 260/289 Cobra.

Rather then design a new grill for the Cobra, AC used remaining grills from the earlier AC Greyhound. They turned it upside down and it became the grill for very early Cobras. Since the folded ‘tabs’ were now pointing up instead of down, AC modified the design for the remaining production of leaf spring Cobras.

Notice that your grill has the tabs pointing down, thus it was built for a Cobra not a Greyhound.

The nose of the Cobra was somewhat 'fitted' to the grill. This will sometimes make exchanging a grill from one car to another difficult.
