An idea I have tossed around, FWIW:
What about an enclosed ram air system? Enclose the carbs in a simple box and run 2 hoses forward to the air inlets on the side of the radiator opening. Easy to find small, round air boxes (Nissan, Toyota, Subaru) that should allow proper filtration and make filters easy to find and inexpensive. This would be easy for me because I use a throttle cable and I do not use the footbox air vents.
