The carb'ed MK IVs had the "cheater duals" that exited via twin pipes, this was because we piggybacked on the Mustang 5.0 certification and that had a similar system. When we went to EFI engines the exhaust went to the full dual system with four catalytic convertors, again cribbed form the Mustang. So a MK IV with factory carb has twin outlets on one side, EFI cars have a single on each side.
The resonator changes the tone of the exhaust. You can remove it but may not like the raspy sound.
