Yep, we even had video rolling today when I saw that the headers hit everything in the world....

69boss429 04-29-2011 03:01 PM

I had the same problem with my Boss on the dyno.
Quick fix, swap sides and turn them upside down.Problem solved.

blykins 04-29-2011 03:02 PM

Don't think we didn't try.

My guy's dyno is an older Stuska and there was no way it was going to fit on there.

69boss429 04-29-2011 03:03 PM

Got pics of it

blykins 04-29-2011 03:04 PM

No, sorry.

We've had to do the ole header swap many times before on other engines and that was the first thing that we thought of.

blykins 05-06-2011 06:09 PM

Ok, back from the dyno....

Even had to put the headers on opposite sides (and turn them upside down) to fit Eric's DTS dyno.

All-in-all, it was a good day. No issues, no problems, and a clean oil filter at the end of the day.

I have to keep reminding myself that this engine was built for a purpose, which was requested by the customer: a very low maintenance engine, runs on pump gas, with extremely docile street manners, higher vacuum (in case of power brakes), and excellent low rpm/mid range performance. I think we met those goals.

Final numbers came up to be 654hp @ 5400 with 652 lb-ft of torque backing it up.

It idled easily at 900 rpm and thumped very hard while doing it.

I would love to embellish the numbers and say this is a 750hp engine, but I think we came up where we needed to be. I'd love to do one of these with a big fatty solid roller in it sometime....

Thanks to Eric at Performance Engineering for accommodating me today....and for letting me wash his dyno room down (someone forgot to put in a block plug right above the pan rail that allows the water to drain out)...... :D

Brent, where's the video?

blykins 05-07-2011 05:34 AM

On the camera....

Haven't had time to pull it down yet.

rustyBob 05-07-2011 07:53 AM

At 654 hp thats not very DOCILE in my book for a street motor.....
congrats on another succesful build.....wish it where mine....

blykins 05-10-2011 04:17 PM

Well, I'm gonna tell on myself...

I've been disappointed with the horsepower on this engine since we got back from the dyno. I know that there are stingy and liberal dynos but I still wasn't satisfied with the results.

Remember when I wrote that I had to turn the headers upside down to fit on the dyno?

Well....

When you turn them upside down, it mismatches the port horribly. You can even put the header gasket on upside down as well. It matches so poorly that it ends up blocking off about a 1/3 of the header. The exhaust exits and it basically hits a wall.

It sounded a little flat on the top end and I think that very well may be why...it couldn't scavenge (or even push out) the exhaust.

My game plan is throw a little more valve spring to it (just to be on the safe side) and find a shop that has a SuperFlow pump. I've already talked to the customer and we're gonna hit her another lick.

rustyBob 05-10-2011 08:33 PM

WOW.....maybe you will hit the 750 mark with those changes....

First I saw this thread.... you all know and have seen more on my engine than I have %/. I know Brent has a CD full of pictures for me.

Here's a current status.... Engine is scheduled to be "re-dynoed" at Jon Kasse's shop on July 5th.

For a complete blow by blow on the entire Boss 529 project... here's my project build link.

Well, got to put her back on the pump at Kaase's shop. On this go around, she made 737hp @ 6000 and 698 lb-ft of torque.

Kaase bought us lunch and we had a good ole time....

Just got back from Atlanta...I'm ready for bed.

Outstanding Brent!! Don't forget to post that video! After you get some rest of course.
