Not doing any short blocks anymore, only completed engines. That way I can dyno them and I know they're right when they leave here.

blykins 09-06-2013 05:51 PM

Alright Cliff....

Got pretty far today. Had to beat the poop out of the oil pan and open up almost every single hole on the flange to get it to fit. I like Aviaid pans, but I've never had one go on without a fight.

Timing cover and balancer are on. Checked the timing marks against true TDC and found out that your adjustable pointer won't adjust to where we need it. I ordered a new one, and will throw this one in your pile.

Measured for pushrods and called Trend to get those ordered. They are a completely custom length, so it will probably be the end of next week before I get them. I wait to put the intake on until I get the pushrods installed and make sure that everything oils the way it's supposed to oil. If I have to make an adjustment on something, it's a lot easier to see what's going on with the intake off. Easier to check lifter preload that way too.

All-in-all, not much more to go. New timing pointer will go on, I'll check the balancer again, then the water pump will go on. Pushrods will come in, I'll throw the rockers on, pop the intake on, and that will pretty much be it.

Brent-is that a 1-piece reusable pan gasket? If so, a FelPro?
Nicely done intake ports for a 331.

ERA2076 09-06-2013 07:28 PM

Damn Brent - Just Awesome. I am very excited to have it. I ran my 03 at PIR this morning in the rain and was very fast compared to the others in my group.

Dancing a 3500 pound car on wet asphalt gives me some hope I can a manage this.

OTH - driving a 90 inch, 2300 lb car, with more horsepower than my 3500lb car is some cause for concern.

Beautiful work.

:)

blykins 09-07-2013 06:51 AM

Yes, Felpro one piece gasket.

On the head intake port, that's how it comes with a CNC cut Twisted Wedge head, made to fit a Felpro 1262 gasket.

I mocked up the Victor intake yesterday to check port alignment and it looked great. The port openings on the intake were just a little smaller than the gasket size, which is just fine as it will help with velocity on this smaller engine.

Cliff, that's why cars have gas pedals. :) You can control them easier that way. ;)

ERA2076 09-07-2013 04:38 PM

Yea - I am counting on extreme response - think we have it?

Should be pretty crisp....

ERA2076 09-08-2013 08:10 PM

maybe we should have spun it a little faster. :)

blykins 09-09-2013 03:00 AM

It should be spinning pretty quick as it is. This is one of those engines where you're right on the fence of going to a solid cam. Always a difficult decision on one of those, "Well, I'm gonna race the car. Oh yeah, I'm going to drive it to cruises on the street too." :)

iismet 09-09-2013 10:06 AM

Who's brite idea was that anyway? :o After tracking the 03, I'm not sure I see any point in driving either of them on the street.

When will you dyno?

Waiting on pushrods and then button it up. Pushrods will prob be here the end of this week. Prob end of next week or so.

Wish we would have went solid....:-(

Yea - I should have stuck to the original plan

It will be good.

ERA2076 09-11-2013 11:13 PM

Brent - will you post up the rockers and stuff before you button up. Also, how will you identify it as your build?

blykins 09-12-2013 03:01 AM

Pushrods came in yesterday around quitting time, along with the new distributor, etc.

Of course I'll take pictures...

Usually, they get a set of logo'd valve covers, etc. to mark it as mine, but since you're going with the Cantons, I'll probably just punch the block/heads. Is that what you're asking?

ERA2076 09-12-2013 09:15 PM

Yea - you have to sign for it somehow. A small tag that could be stamped and attached somewhere visible would be cool.

Brent,
Mind posted an all-up weight when done? Carb, coil and wires-no alt. I'm guessing under 420.
Will Cliff run that System-1 or that just for dyno?

blykins 09-13-2013 04:10 PM

I don't have any scales to measure a complete engine with. It's extremely light though....I could pick the block up off the floor with one finger. The crank weighed 46 lbs.

The oil filter is mine. I use it on every engine when I dyno.

ERA Chas 09-13-2013 04:21 PM

That might not hurt a bathroom scale.../:<) Probably 380.
