Brighter headlights
I ran thru some of the search function "hits" and found a few threads on this subject. I want to put brighter headlights in my B&B roadster but dont want to rewire for the xenon kit (bought as a turnkey minus). Does anyone know manufacturers who sell brighter lights that are bolt in without the worry of melting wires? Just checking to see what is out there. Thanks, Brian

I'm trying a set of tribar repos I bought on eBay that will accept a modern bulb Like Sylvania Silver Stars. Don't have them in yet but should be better than standard sealed beams. Larry |
I agree with everything getting darker. As modern cars have high intensity headlamps, driving the cobra can be difficult at night as its hard to see. Please let me know the difference from your OEM lights. Thanks, Brian

Has anyone ever tried the aftermarket kits from Valeo/Sylvania from their aftermarket division, xSighting Lighting:

I run a set of Hella 80/100 halogen headlamps. Turns night into day and has not affected the electrics or wiring on my SPF.

I've used the Hellas also as well as the halogen H4's. Both are easily installed without relay modifications and really light up everything.
Be absolutely sure that you wear gloves during the installation because fingerprints or bodily oils will shorten the lifespan on both sets. |
Easy to have brighter lights
I installed Cibie H4 lens (E-code) with 55/60W H4 bulbs. These lens have a longer (higher) cut off on the right to allow you see further and not blind on-coming traffic on low beams. The high beams really shine far down the road.
To get brighter light without going to 80W or more bulbs, you need to replace all wiring to each headlight with thicker wire ( iused 12 gauge), install two relays (one for low beam and a second for high beam), and feed power to these two relays (directly) from the alternator / battery. This set up also saves your existing headlight switch (and dimmer switch) from higher electrical loads incurred by the higher watt bulbs. If you go with 80W bulbs, you can drastically shorten the life of your existing wires and switches due to the higher electical load (amps), and not get the perfromance you are seeking. I purchased all the parts I needed several years ago from www.danielsternlighting.com. This is a great site to learn a lot about headlights. I checked and the site still looks active. |

I did a Google search and found this link. $40 a piece. Great investment is safe night time driving.

I have used many types of headlights in my Arntz Cobra over 20 years of driving and running rallys. My home made versions are the best, with a Nissan Murano HID assembly mounted inside a new 7" unit.
The Hella's have very good beam pattern with Halogen bulbs (Not so good with HID's). I have a set that I used for about a year and lots of brand new bulbs. I got a pair of HELLA replacement assemblies from Summit. I'm running the lamps that came with the set and have been very happy! The optics are so much better that you don't waste a bunch of light. Just put it where you need it! No need to do any mods to your wiring!

I just looked at Summit and they have 2 different Hella part numbers and prices for this application. Do you recall which one you bought?

I went with the hella H4 60/55w Xenon lights and it was a significant improvement over the stock sealed bulb. I may try the 100/80W lights if one burns out. I have my lights on a lot (regular drive over a windy hwy to meet up with other Cobra owners) so the lower draw 60/55w lights are a safe bet with the stock SPF wiring.

Doug, thanks for the post. I'm going to do this upgrade and was concerned that the 100/80's would just suck the life out of the factory wiring over time. I honestly don't drive a whole lot when it's dark, and when I do it's for shorter (under 25 miles) distances. Still, I need something better than what's on there now and have to run the high beams just to see the road.
