California title question

I have a GT40 with a California SB100 title but the year on the title is 0000. I was wondering if that is normal? I am selling the car and the title without a model year is a little worrisome.

Gunner 12-28-2009 05:34 PM

Sounds like one of the registrations that fell between the gaps in the various years. If a specially-constructed vehicle does not resemble any prior vehicle, regs of various years dictated the assignment of 0000 or 1960. Under current regs, it would be assigned the year of build, and if there is a space for a model year, it would be 1967 or whatever. Since you have that prized SB-100, I wouldn't worry about it.

...You know what, on second thought that's probably not a correctable condition and it could be very dangerous. You should just ship the car to me and I'll promise to handle it all carefully. :D

If I remember right my Hawaii ERA title also says something like "First year sold" 00. It notes the MODEL is a 1965 Cobra.

I think that's correct. My registration has 00/00/0000 as the "Date First Sold." The "YR" is listed as a 2006.

The DMV made a big deal about the fact that the Date First Sold had to be 00/00/0000 in their system and on the final docs for SB100.

BTW - Make is SPCNS.

Correct

0000 is correct. I just saw the DMV's procedure on how to enter an SPCNS in the system. It said plain as day, "Enter year as 0000".

I wonder what kind of issue I would have if I try to title it in Illinois? If I did that and it was then purchased by someone from CA, would the sb100 still work?

Deleted post to avoid confusion. See posts below.

Dean it is correct for a car registered in CA as a "Special Construction" vehicle to show a yr/model as 0000. I have mine right here in front of me. It should also show yr first sold as the year the "kit" was purchased. Mine says 2008 for that.
It is my understanding that if the SB100 smog exempted car is registered outside of CA and then comes back that it must go back through the SB100 process for a new exception.

That was my understanding as well.

Getting the ERA registered in California was a factor in deciding whether to move there or Oregon (once I had it narrowed down to those two states). It wasn't the only reason of course, but it certainly WAS a factor I seriously considered.

Looks like it will be very easy to do here in Oregon, not that I can drive it anyway, MAN HAS IT BEEN COLD UP HERE!!!! :)

This is correct.

The car might be worth more to a CA buyer...

RodKnock 12-29-2009 01:50 AM

Dean, I know the GT40 has changed hands a couple times since it was here in CA, is the registration still in the CA owner's name? Is the registration still current? Once you surrender the CA title to IL, then CA SB100 exemption is surrendered as well.

dlampe 12-29-2009 06:32 AM

Yes, it still has the CA title and registration. It hasn't changed hands in that it has been sold to an individual. It is still registered to the original owner. It has been assigned to 2 dealers to help the guy sell the car. It is still legally registered in CA. Anyone know someone that might be interested for $78,000?

Dean, is this an SPF GT? Mk I or II? Color? Powerplant? $78K sounds quite attractive.

Is this documented anywhere? There have been discussions on CC over time about this issue, but I couldn't find any details in the original SB100 bill.

Dean it's a red SPF MKI P2122 (early car) with a 418 (351W). Here's an old ad:

dlampe 12-29-2009 02:55 PM

Dean, it is a well sorted SPF MK1, red with white stripes. I am very impressed with the quality and the manners of this car. I traded my RCR for this car and I felt like I got good deal so I am selling it for about what I need to in order to come out on the RCR.

RedBarchetta 12-29-2009 04:28 PM

Good luck with the sale. Attractively priced considering all the extra attention you gave it (as per the link that Rod provided). You can't duplicate that car for under $100K.

dlampe 12-29-2009 06:10 PM

Thanks, I think it will sell soon. I just put new tires on. I think the others where just to small. The current picture looks much better. By the way, what's with the "early car" thing. I have heard that before but I can't think of any up grades that anyone else has or problems that need to be corrected. If anyone has any insight for me, please share. As a matter of fact, some of the problems people talk about I didn't have with this car. Are the early cars better?
