What's the problem with the size of the 385 series? Hell, everyone drools over the 427 SOHC engine in a Cobra and it's a lot bigger.
I have a 385 series in mine and love it. Only issue I have is that I have to remove the back spark plug on the drivers side from under the car. Actually I don't have to. It's just easier.
