Unque is makes an excellent car.

I've been driving my Unique for 8 years and can attest to the quality of the car and the ride. I also have the FIA shifter location and find it to be an excellet location with regards to driving comfort. I did change the shifter stick to a shape the prevented interference with the dash. Why do you consider the MGB rack to be a problem? I believe that is what the original car used. In any event, mine works great. Pick up a new dash panel and set it up per your personal taste. No big deal. Post on the Unique forum if you want to learn more about the car.

If it's cheap & the running gear is in good condition I'd say go for it. From what i can see, everything is very fixable. Unique Makes a very nice looking, solid car. Does it have bolt on wheels or Pin Drives? What are they asking? What Motor?

Uniques are solid, well built cars with beautiful, accurate body lines and a correct stance. They have an excellent support network from the manufacturers. If you do buy the car, you can contact the Weavers at Unique Motorcars and they will be as helpful and welcoming as if you had just bought a new car directly from them.
There is also a dedicated owners forum with a wealth of support and expertise:
www.uniquecobra.com

Older Uniques came standard with an MGB steering and front suspension system. There was an optional upgrade to an in-house fully adjustable coil over front suspension system which I believe is now standard equipment. When I bought my car it had the MGB setup and I easily swapped it out for the complete, bolt-in upgraded coilover system. Both use an MGB steering rack, so you should verify which setup this particular car is equipped with. Either way, if the price is right and the car was properly put together and maintained, it is well worth serious consideration.

Here's a pic of the upgraded (right hand drive!!) front suspension shortly after install. My car was originally built in 1988 (never fully completed) and when I bought it in 2000, I did a body off rebuild with new parts and accessories from Unique.

I'm assuming this car is in the U.S. (it looks like one I've seen on eBay before).

Before you get too excited about this car, contact the seller and verify whether he has the paperwork to prove its age to Canada Customs. This is a pass or fail question.

Basically you're gonna need a government-issued document which proves the vehicle was completed more than 15 years ago. Ideally the seller will have a state DMV-issued title that accurately describes the car as a 1991 model year, kit car. If he doesn't have something like that, you run the risk of it being disallowed at the border.

Good luck.

If you like toying with small projects in your spare time this car looks like it has some upgrades that can be done to make it a real clone. If the price is too good to pass up & mechanically it's up to snuff, again, it really looks like a nice possibility.

Thanks *13* , Im'm getting kind of excited now . Its seven hours away , but seven winter Minnesota hours , so hopefuly it will hold till spring , the price is stupid low to , $28k , that kind of worries me . But it is a 18 year old car with a 351 so maybe thats good . I was looking at a CCX with the same setup for $31k but thats days away .

And I used to live in Canada. Got married there too. St. Lucia is constantly cooled by the trade winds so although the temperatures sound high, there is usually a nice, cooling breeze. Trinidad is fun - nice girls. My buddies are trying to convince me right now to join them on a tour to the Beyonce concert there next month. hmmmmm...
Piton Beer, buddy! It's ok as a thirst quencher, but I prefer the Heineken. :3DSMILE:

Edit - looking at the new pics you posted, that car looks like a great candidate for a street roadster conversion. You want to redo the dash anyway, there are no roll bar holes to patch, it's blessed with an accurate body and a correct stance. The last two are very important, as the beauty of the street car lies in the incredible lines, unadorned with roll bar and sidepipes.

Cobra replicas are like attractive women - they all look good all dressed up and gussied up, but only some can confidently stand naked, with no distracting adornments - and still be purely, strikingly beautiful.

Buzz thats exactly what I was thinking , I love the street look . If your going to Trini you gotta drink a Caribe or if you believe the hype , as a ton of trini's I knew did , Stag " its a man's beer " . Funny coincidences with canada/etc or are you pulling my leg on the married thing ? Oh and as they say during carnival " stick with your crew " trini can get rough , but the Beyonce tour will be a major fete . Oh its -23* c here today , enjoy the cool breezes .

Lol! - No, not pulling your leg at all. I actually had two weddings - one for friends and in laws in Canada and another one with family and friends down here. Married twice without going through a divorce!

Do the street car thing, man! Sometimes I get a real strong urge to strip mine naked; the only concern I have is the bad roads down here and the ground clearance issues with undercar exhausts.

PS - I don't really like Carib beer, but the wife always keeps a few in the fridge for guests and I use them a lot for cooking. Guinness is great for that too. Conch, octopus and/or squid stewed in guinness - yumm!

Lol! And possibly both with Unique Cobras, too... It is starting to sound kinda strange... %/

Black Mamba 01-28-2010 11:45 AM

I saw the ad online:

http://www.classiccarsglobal.com/ad.asp?ad=001329

Looks like a really nice ride and the reputation of Unique is outstanding. My concerns on a car that was built in '91 - and I'm going through this with my CCX '95 build - is that you have a fair chunk of upgrades to do, hoses, belts, fluids, etc. What is the guesstimate of what you need to do to make it suit you / get road worthy? Probably $1K on the low side, $5K on the upper.
How long has the dealer had it? Since it's a dealer you have to figure they took it in on trade and gave someone $15K, listed it at $29K now. It is the middle of winter with probably nothing moving... especially a convertible without a heater. I'd start low, pointing out the objects you need to address, and offer $19K or $20K. Worst case is that you end up back where you were originally thinking but my guess is they'll jump at any reasonable offer.
Good Luck!

Black Mamba 01-28-2010 11:52 AM

But wait there's more...

Just went to the actual website for the dealer and it's down to $23.5K there, still with a MUST SELL MAKE OFFER

I think I may start at $16K / $17K and see what happens.

SunDude 01-28-2010 12:22 PM

This car has been for sale for ages. I recall seeing it on eBay more than a year ago, when I was looking at buying my Cobra, and even saved a PDF of this dealer's website back then.

Realistically you might get this UM Cobra for less than $20K. I had been looking at a UM Cobra that was in pristine and fully optioned condition, and it sold for only mid-20s.

Might be worth the drive for you to see it in person...just call first to confirm they've got the right paperwork.
