CA guys. Is sb100 in DANGER?
Had a friend over last night. He is a big vette fan. Said he met a GM guy at BJ auction that told him Chevy was bringing out a new motor for kit cars that met Ca emissions because sb100 was going to be repealed. Said I had never heard about it as I haven't seen anything posted here about it.
He also said that FF's new car and there hot rod will be available with chevy motor mounts to fit this engine because of the above fact. What say ye???? |
A major automobile company invested in the production a special engine to capture the lion's share of the lucrative 500 annual unit SB100 market? Really?
|
So far I have heard nothing about SB-100 being repealed. The Chevy Green set up was an agreement between SEMA and the CARB people and it is supposed to pass California emissions, but I dont know of anyone who has actually tried it.
Edit: This link may help understand what is going on more than just posting about it. http://superchevy.automotive.com/120...lem/index.html Ron |

Again I haven't heard of it but he was real adamant about it. Try and convince a die hard vette guy that the GM guy didn't know what he was telling him is a line of BS. |
I think it is great that GM, if they are, would build a smog friendly engine, but does it look 60's authentic? If not they are still cutting out a huge portion of the Kit guys. I can't imagine building a Superformance GrandSport Vette with a Smog motor in it. That's just plain silly.

http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...&highlight=ls3 It's my understanding that the LS3 is 50 State legal and comes with a computer, Cats, etc. to pass all smog requirements. My guess is that Ford Motorsports will offer a similar solution at some point in the future. I haven't heard anything about SB100 being repealed. |
GM's sales weens would LIKE to think that smog exemptions would be repealed so that their kit motor is the only option. Time to put the cork back in the bottle, guys. :D
That said, I don't know how many more years of relative freedom we have on this point. We may be a lot closer to the tough Australian process in ten years. Or not. Hard to convince anyone that a few hundred limited-mileage cars a year are going to cause more of a problem than the millions of older cars already there. |
Read the lyrics to my favorite song (see user ID). 'Nuff said...we are heading there. Rush (well, Neil Peart) was 30 years ahead of everyone else.

Thirty years ago, Dean, we were on the verge of losing real cars forever - the era of the Mustang II, the 160HP Vette, the Chevy Monza Sport... it wasn't prescience, it was looking doom in the face.
I think we have a better future now that they've learned to build very low emission engines with no power compromise. Ten years from now 1-litre 140HP cars might be the norm, but we won't be in the horrible state we were in the mid-70s. (Police Interceptor 460: 172HP, 285 FPT... auuughhh!) |
Monza sport--was a real car---mine ran mid 7s at 180mph

I wouldn't doubt if there was an effort to repeal SB-100.
The only thing that seems to be slowing down AB-32 is the economy. rodneym |
BTW, I believe Morgester said in a previous thread that he doesn't see the 500 numbers of SB-100 being being added to, or subtracted. I believe he implied that it will stand as is, and make the best of it.
But would we would be grandfathered in???? Opinions? |

I don't worry about it at the moment...I just drive it like I stole it. |
:D
Well I have mine and I am hanging onto it. At least they can't pull the title of the 69. And I am not to worried about the Coupe either. Ron ;) |
Why do people live in California? Is it because you were born there and it's all you've ever known? You like paying confiscatory taxes? You like living surrounded by freaks? Cruising down the PCH can't be enough to offset all of the other hassles, can it?
I'd rather eat glass. :p |
If you have to ask, then you don't understand...
|
During college I worked at the Riviera Golf Club in Pacific Palisades for a month. I "get it" but you're right, I don't "understand" it...
Certain states / people are willing to put up with certain things I suppose. It's interesting that this is being discussed as something that could happen and the assumed context appears to be there is nothing the people can do about it. All our "60% approval rating" Governor had to do was support the "stimulus" and now he is being bounced out on his rear end in the GOP primary for US Senate. Some things are unacceptable to some people and they do something about it. |

Arnold has done everything in his power to dig California out of its hole, considering what he inherited...and he's not a "gurly man." |
