Can anyone identify this Cobra kit?
This Cobra replica has been listed on AutoTrader Canada for several months now, and apparently the car is heading to the Spring Classic Car Auction of Toronto next weekend.
I've looked at the photos several times and for the life of me, I can't figure out which kit it is. Any ideas? |
I don't have a clue but I know I would not like to be riding in the middle seat........
|
The roll bar looks like West Coast but thats it.
|
The ad is definitely misleading:
1966 A/C Cobra Replica "by Shelby America Inc. Los Angeles California" %/ |
You mean it's not made by "Shelby-American" like the ad says???
|
I think its a C.M.C. They used the odd shaped doors. (the front of the doors)
|
You got me on that one? No idea
|
Just a long shot here but it might be one of Turn Ten's offerings.

The 9" front discs is a big clue, probably used a Mustang II front suspension. How many kit makers used or still use this front suspension. LAX did. Maybe B&B (successor). Or, the builder could have bought a complete Heidts or other manufacturer's front end setup based on Mustang II. You can buy these with a front crossmember and 9" discs. 9" front rotors really suck and shouldn't even be offered. With a minimum 15" front wheel, 11" rotors easily fit and are a 22% improvement.**)

My buddy's neighbor had a west coast cobra and the roll bar looked like that.

Not a West Coast. |
Looks B&B to me.
|
B&B dosent have a lip on the rear 1/4 panels.
|
I cant look at it anymore. -- ughleee.

Thanks for looking and for hazarding a guess.
I've also been going back and forth with the dealer, trying to identify the kit in question, but have come up empty. Apparently they simply took the car in as is, without ever bothering to ask what kit it was. They seemed to accept that it was a "Shelby American Inc. from Los Angeles" up until I pointed out that you can buy those reproduction plaques from many different vendors. I'm still hoping to get to Toronto this weekend for the auction, so maybe I can find out more about the car and snap some pics. |
Emerson Motorsports
I believe it is an Emerson Motorsports car out of Northern California. Sure looks like it to me.

Pretty sure it's a Shell Valley...
I just got home from the Spring Classic Car Auction in Toronto this weekend. I saw the car in person, took lots of photos, saw it cross the block, and met the new owner (a gentleman named Bill H.).
I'm not pretending to be an expert here, nor could I actually see/locate any manufacturer's identification, but from what I could tell it looks like this is a Shell Valley Cobra replica which has been customized/modified somewhat by the original builder. Shell Valley used to have a "dealer" in Ontario, so there are a few of them kicking around. The frame was constructed of rectangular tubing with two straight, longitudinal members running parallel from front to back. http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2988/img2131t.th.jpg http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9921/img2137v.th.jpg http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/1249/img2073k.th.jpg Strangely, there were no inner fenders up front... http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/5521/img2139l.th.jpg Some elements of the bodywork looked very much like Shell Valley, in particular the shape/height of the nose and grille opening, and the wedge shape of the hood scoop. http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3245/img2066e.th.jpg http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/6564/img2083c.th.jpg http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/3554/img2076x.th.jpg The cockpit opening seemed elongated aft of the seats...is this a modification? http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1588/img2084gp.th.jpg The dashboard was customized, with ol' timey Ford gauges...but note how much the fibreglass has been thickened around the doors and cockpit edge... http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/2582/img2068u.th.jpg http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/4369/img2070p.th.jpg The fibreglass was thickened around the engine bay too, and are those latches custom or stock Shell Valley? http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/402/img2074e.th.jpg Does Shell Valley use stalks like these? http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5969/img2135e.th.jpg Look through the side vents and you'll see that the footboxes block the back half... http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2205/img2132e.th.jpg The trunk was full o' junk, and didn't reveal many clues...unless you see them... http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8...g2081ao.th.jpg http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1503/img2082r.th.jpg The wheels used five lugs... http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/861/img2072v.th.jpg The hammer price was $41,500 CAD plus 10% buyer's premium... (Note, the dealer had been asking $49,995 on AutoTrader for months.) http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1386/img2088u.th.jpg The car was registered as a "home-built vehicle" (VIN number starting with HOM...), which is incorrect for a kit car. Hope it doesn't cause the new owner troubles when it comes to plating and insuring it... So what do you guys think: Could it be a Shell Valley? |
Its not a Shell Valley, the glass around the hood opening is wrong.
|
I realize the 'glass around the hood opening is wrong, as the builder has clearly built it up/customized it around the engine bay and the door openings/sills. But many other parts of the bodywork look like Shell Valley.
Can anyone tell whether this is a Shell Valley, from the other shots of the bodywork, frame and other components? |
