Show me your safety wire and pins
 
Some recently asked me about "safety pins" instead of safety wire. I wracked my brains out looking for the pins that would go through the hole (as shown in the attached picture). Someone must make a safety type pin to use. Anyone have any ideas?

Correct. And that jogged my memory of the thread -- started by none other than rsimoes -- about just that. Halibrand was marketing the pins on the left in the above picture, but it has been a few years since they were available.

Bill,

You may have thought of this, but they look very much like the range of locks we use on the pins to hold the buckets and rippers in place on various heavy excavating equipment.

Why would you want pins over safety wire? Seems like pins would allow the spinners to loosen (although not come off) and they don't look as good (IMHO). I guess it's easier to take them in and out, but it's not like it takes very long to safety wire a wheel. :confused:

As I recall, the 63-66 Corvettes had those little anti-theft pins that went in on the hubs to protect the knock offs. They seemed to work well, but I haven't thought of that in many years. Surely someone around here owned a Corvette of that vintage and remembers those little pins.

Mine actually have screws in them. Two in each wheel they screw all the way down but will prevent the spinners from coming off. Are you sure yours are not threaded?

Wrong. I owned several. No safety wires, no anti-theft pins. The originals depended on one thing -a lead hammer.

That's not true. Google Corvette Anti-Theft Pins. They fit inside the hub and hold the knock offs on. It's all over the old corvette forums. This is what they look like:

After market stuff. Never came from the factory with them.

That article is referring to REPO wheels. The originals never had any safety pins.
You may think you're an expert because you have a REPLICA of a REAL car but when it comes to Corvettes, you're out of your league. I've been a member of the NCRS for over 30 years and have had several Top Flight (look it up) cars with knock-off wheels. Don't use Google to make you look like you know what you're talking about. It will make you look like a fool.:rolleyes:

Yes, reproduction KO's for 63-66 Corvettes have pins. The original KO's do not. More recently, they do now make bolt-on KO's for 63-66 Corvettes.
